It's different when you're a kid and developing language skills.
You're near Hollywood. You have nubile young things everywhere. Pick one
with the accent you want to learn and tell the girlfriend she's your
dialect coach. You can audition to play the creaky butler at the
Pssadena Playhouse.
My maternal grandfather was from Holywood (which is a town about 15
miles NE of Belfast and it's pronounced the same way as that other
vale of inquity in California known for making flicks. It sometimes
leads to humorous moments. Still it's one of the places that I'm glad
to have visited since more generations of my various lines have lived
in (as opposed to my father's male line that started in upstate NY and
never stayed in one place for more than a couple of generations. I
suppose the present generation would outdo that record since we live
about 30 miles from my paternal grandparents - but have an
international border (Canada-USA) between us. The rest of the clan all
live in various parts of North American except for my cousin (not too
many folks from rural America in downtown Paris but she's one) plus my
daughter in Britain and my niece in NZ. (I don't hear from her too
often but the last e-mail dealt with her engagement which is more than
a casual e-mail!) As someone with a rare name, my brother and I
produced 6 children and of the two boys my son has a 4 year old
daughter (and apparently arent seeking more) and my nephew is
unattached but the youngest of the clan so who knows?
