As someone who spent a good chunk of my youth in Canada, I can vouch for
the fact that Canadians' hatred of Americans massively pre-dates Trump.
They have always hated American for a whole host of reasons (most of
which reflects poorly on Canada IMO - their one complaint that American >tourists are loud boors is the only one I will give them).
In fairness I don't think that's true though I may not be a typical
Canadian since I have more American than Canadian relatives at least
to the first cousin level which as I've states previously is more due
to the size of my father's family compared to my mother's. And I
wasn't joking about being conceived in the Bay area and born in
Vancouver then spending the first 4 years of my life in the Bay area.
Trump has just magnified their hatred.
Which Trump has gone very far out of his way to promote.
What mystifies me is that most Americans don't realize how much
Canadians hate them, and don't return the favor. Americans need to wake
up on this score.
Frankly I >don't< think that's a widespread Canadian view nor the
majority view but more like 'what the f*** is the president doing
NOW?!?" I really do think Americans will find Canadians more receptive
when Trump is gone as he's been deliberately picking on Canadian sore
points for most of his second term so far.
For myself the ONLY American I've ever hated was during the peak of
COVID when the border was closed except by permit. An American applied
for permission to take his pickup truck from Washington to Alaska
(there were 100 or so such permits given) and he was required to wear
a mask (as most of us were) when out of his vehicle. He also
negotiated a proposed route for his trip.
The reason why I hate him is that during the very worst of COVID when
paranoia was rife (and I'm pretty sure the US and Canada rules were
much the same at that point and that all of us are glad that time is
in our tail lights) this clown was caught for speeding in Calgary -
which is more than 300 miles off the route he had agreed to before
crossing the border. During the worst days of COVID none of the
restrictions he was compelled to agree to were considered at all "over
the top" - and in my view he put the towns he went to needlessly at
risk and during the pandemic that's a VERY big deal indeed. Look at a
map and you'll quickly see how far off the route he had negotiated was
from Seattle to Alaska. (Kinda like going from LA to Seattle via
Denver which is fine now but during the worst days of COVID not so
much)
It definitely wouldn't be a big deal (or ANY kind of deal) now but in
the dark days of the first half of 2020 that was a VERY big deal
indeed and I'm not the only Canadian who loathed the guy.
Our widespread clan stayed in touch via Facebook and other apps and we
were probably closer during the worst of the pandemic than before or
since. For instance we knew we weren't going to see my daughter in
England till COVID was beaten - but we used the net to stay in touch
probably more than we do in 2026.
