Yesterday I rewatched Twisted, a musical by the YouTube troupe StarKid.

Many of their musicals are rather slight and just for fun, but Twisted
rises above as superior. Despite an unfortunate tendency toward crude
humor, it uses parody to create a work with more breadth and depth than
the original. I recommend it highly, and if you're at all interested, I suggest skipping the rest of this and just watching it.
The basic idea is that we're seeing the story of Disney's Aladdin from
Jafar's point of view. Jafar is a good man who does his best for a
people who seem dumb, unappreciative, and generally helpless. He is
loyal to his Sultan and very protective of the princess. He's largely motivated by altruism, though he does hope that one day people will
appreciate his efforts.
There's so much brilliant humor which comes from just looking
objectively at the events of the Disney movie. As just one example,
Disney Aladdin wishes to be a prince, but he's not the prince *of*
anything. In Twisted, Jafar accurately describes this as wishing for a
prince costume. Most of this flies by pretty rapidly.
The music is also marvelous. It's worth paying attention to the musical motifs.
In the end, Jafar overcomes his tragic flaw and accepts that history
will see him as a villain. His struggle culminates with some absolutely amazing lyrics, as the music thunders. The ending is sweet.
The show's marred by unnecessary crudity, like most of StarKid's work,
and by a few instances of silliness at inappropriate times as well as
laying on the Disney jokes fairly hard. Despite these flaws, IMO it's a
tour de force.
