• THE ODYSSEY: No Orchestra, But Yes to Rap

NOLAN: No orchestra for THE ODYSSEY score because orchestras didnrCOt exist back
    then.
rC?Also NOLAN: We're going to have Travis Scott rap in the movie because rap is equivalent to oral poetry.

    Is Nolan smoking crack?

Combine that with a black Helen of Troy and a 100-pound rail-thin girl-pretending-to-be-a-guy playing Achilles (Elliot Page), and it's getting harder and harder to dismiss the conspiracy weavers' claim that all this race and gender swapping in Hollywood is done to purposely destroy/erase Western culture and its accomplishments, legends, and mythology.

At the very least, Nolan sounds like he's trying to be hip (or whatever
the contemporary term is) and is desperately worried that no one will
watch a movie where real poems of the era are spoken so he's going to
get the young folk into the theatre by doing rap instead.

But undermining Western Civilization is also pretty likely. A LOT of
people have been working on that lately! The very fact that rap is
popular is clear proof that our civilization is in decline. I thought it
was a passing fad that would mercifully pass in 6 months when I first
heard it in the 80s. Clearly, I was wrong about that!

I remember when people drove by in their cars in the summer with the
windows open - hardly anyone had A/C - and they'd be blasting Van Halen
or any number of melodic songs with hooks. Now, they don't crack a
window due to the A/C but they're three times as loud with hundreds of
watts blasting through the neighbourhood and the "music" is some awful
rap. I keep hoping we'll see a return of melody but I've been waiting
for that unsuccessfully for many years now.

Personally, I've always described rap as "music for non-musicians".
Instead of having to learn some music theory and some harmony, which
takes years to get halfway good at, we have rap which the average
knucklehead can figure out how to do in 10 minutes and still make big
money, ending the necessity to learn about his craft.

    Holy deja vu! ;-)

Hey, Chris Nolan, guess what else didn't exist back then?

The English language. Yet the movie is in English, not Ancient Greek.

Back in the 80s, the early stuff was actually pretty cool. In my yout, I loved "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang.

That was when it was still creative and wasn't all about bitches and ho's, and killing cops, and bragging about who's got the most Benjamins.

The composer supposedly rented a bunch of bronze gongs of varying sizes and then recorded them and processed them through synthesizers.

Okay, wait... we can't have an orchestra because orchestras didn't exist back then, but we *can* have synthesizers? Because the ancient Greeks were well known for their musical prowess with the synthesizer. Or something.

This entire film seems to be shaping up to be a gigantic face-palm.

It's too bad, because I was originally interested in this. But every
decision since then, casting or otherwise, just makes this a big "Nnnooooooo..."

It does sound like Christopher Nolan has lost whatever he used to "have"...

He's gone full-retard. Everything I've seen of this flick is preposterously stupid,
this will go down as one of the all time worst movies ever.
