Working my way through old issues of rCLIFrCY and rCLGalaxyrCY SF magazines from archive.org, came across this little tale in the March 1964 issue
of IF. Some interesting turns of phrase ...

Garfield began to laugh but then his eyes followed the line of
JohnstonrCOs rigid gaze, and his humor died a nervous death.
Tempting brown bodies played in the distant sun.
rCLWhat -- is -- this?rCY The words were terrible, threateningly
    spaced.

    ...

rCLIs it *all* there?rCY Garfield asked.
Johnston nodded. rCLSo you found the discrepancies?rCY he said,
    pedantic with an inner excitement.

    ...

rCLAnd, of course, the foliose animal has the function of
storing the food. So that when the Bighead eats its branches, it
gets predigested food in an assimilable form.rCY Johnston finished
abruptly, turning a smug gaze on Garfield for admiration.

I will admit the story does have a decent plot, even if some of the
ideas about planetary and biological evolution are a little
    excessively ... teleological ...

Huh. An author about which ISFDB knows little. Lists two stories
    and a Japanese penname.

The letters page of the same issue adds, in a reply by the Editor to a
reader, that she is rCLa young lady who teaches science in Australia,
and writes about as well as as any heretofore-unpublished writer werCOve
    seen in a long timerCY.
