    Why did it need to 'appeal to a wider audience'? The original audience was robust enough to keep the show on the air for seven years. Seems like in TV world, that's a goldmine.

    Amazon sells ads. "Wider audience" may mean "desirable demographic".

    Seven years? Some people would count up to 10, not including increasingly terrible spinoffs and sequels.

    Some people would discount anything but the original movie. :-)
    (Including some of the movie crators themselves, who wanted to do a
    follow-up movie that ignored the TV series and all its changes!)
