I don't know, but in the rewrite, they added a scene with Buffy.

In the script in that link, there's one quick scene with Buffy at the
end. We see Buffy going by her middle name, apparently in some other
city and doing something else, but she gets an alert about trouble in Sunnydale.

Buffy Summers is believed to be a legend by the Sunnydale residents of
today, which seems strange since she went to high school and community
college there. Perhaps there was some sort of cover-up. We'll never
know, since it isn't proceeding.

As I understood it, she's still in Sunnydale.

The script doesn't say either explicitly either way. I inferred that she
was elsewhere, though.
