Zack Snyder Reimagining Beloved John Carpenter Sci-Fi Movie
-----------------------------------------------------------
Zack Snyder is tackling a reimagining of a beloved John Carpenter
sci-fi movie. Studiocanal and The Picture Company are currently
involved with the project, which is expected to be taken out to
market in the near future.
Snyder made his feature film directorial debut in 2004 with Dawn
of the Dead. After that, he went on to make 2006's 300, 2009's
Watchmen, 2010's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole,
and 2011's Sucker Punch. At this point in his career, Snyder then
made 2013's Man of Steel, which launched the DCEU at Warner Bros.
He followed Man of Steel with 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of
Justice and 2017's Justice League, though Justice League had a
notoriously troubled development, which ultimately led to the
release of Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021.
Additionally, Snyder made 2021's Army of the Dead, 2023's Rebel
Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, and 2024's Rebel Moon - Part
Two: The Scargiver. He's currently working on a drama movie
called The Last Photograph, though a release date for that
project has not yet been set.
What John Carpenter sci-fi movie is Zack Snyder remaking?
Per The Hollywood Reporter, it's now been announced that Snyder
is writing and directing a reimagining of Carpenter's Escape from
New York. The original Escape from New York was released in 1981
and sees Kurt Russell playing S.D. "Snake Plissken." It was
followed by a sequel, Escape from L.A., in 1996.
A description of the original film reads, "In 1997, a major war
between the United States and the Soviet Union is concluding, and
the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant
maximum security prison. When Air Force One is hijacked and
crashes into the island, the president is taken hostage by a group
of inmates. Snake Plissken, a former Special Forces soldier turned
criminal, is recruited to retrieve the president in exchange for
his own freedom."
Plot details for Snyder's version remain under wraps at this time.
Hollywood has been trying to make an Escape from New York remake
happen for years, now, as directors such as Len Wiseman, Robert
Rodriguez, Leigh Whannell, and more were previously attached to it
in the past.
