Number one would I think be "Dark City". If there were such a thing as
a "sleeper classic", this would be it.
I definitely second "Dark City". Back when Mystery Science Theater
was still going strong, I was part of an online group who would get
together in a chat room and mock movies on TV, MST3K style. One time
the movie that we watched was "Dark City", and couldn't riff on it
because I was too busy watching and enjoying it.
"The Thirteenth Floor" is also worth a watch.
This is at least the third or fourth time I've seen that movie
recommended. I'll have to look for it.
Any others?
One that I really like and which seems like few people have heard is
is The Signal:

Starts out seeming like it's going to be a bog-standard horror movie,
but then it gets really weird...but with an explanation of the
weirdness at the end.
Other ones that spring to mind are Aniara, Dark Star, Moon, Under the
Skin, Annihilation...I'll probably think of another half dozen right
after I post this.
