    tonight. If the weather is clear, and you're awake at that hour, and
    you have a good telescope, you may be able to see it. If not, don't

    From the reports I've seen so far, the impact wasn't discernible even
    with good instruments. They'll need to study the photos to find any sign
    of the crash.

    A Spanish observatory has posted a preliminary video of what is likely
    the impact - the impact itself isn't visible but the ejecta from the
    impact is [1].

    Google suggests that The Instituto de Astrof|!sica de Andaluc|!a has
    access to two facilities with a total of 5 largeish telescopes in the
    0.9-3.5 meter optical size range. It could be taken with one of these
    or something smaller, we just don't know.

    There's enough zoom that it's clearly not handheld telescope but also
    enough noise that I doubt they used one of the large ones for this.

    I expect they'll post better videos and MUCH better photos later once
    they've finished processing everything. And we may well see others
    publish additional videos.

    Note that impacts comparable to this happens roughly every 6 days! on
    the moon, It's just that those are meteroids... [2]

    As impacts goes it's bigger than the Long March 3 upper stage impact
    (China, 2022) - this was initially misidentified as a Falcon 9 upper
    stage when the moon impacting orbit was detected but was shown to be a
    LM3 upper stage long before the impact.

    But it's much smaller than say the Apollo 13 Saturn V upper stage
    impact (1970). I suspect several other S-IVB also impacted the moon,
    A13 is just the one with extensive seismograph data.

    The difference is that we knew exactly when and where that rocket
    stage would hit, so lots of telescopes and cameras were watching.

    It's like the difference between the first plane crash into the WTC
    and the second one. Lots more cameras were watching to see the second
    one. Remarkably, it later turned out that two people just happened to
    making videos that saw the first one. But nobody made a clear video
    of the impact into the Pentagon. And only one person filmed the JFK assassination, and a street sign blocked the key frames.

    second than were taken in the whole of the 19th century.

    We're rapidly approaching a total surveillance society. When it comes
    to astronomy, that's a *good* thing. When no impact on the moon or
    any other planet is missed. When we have a complete inventory of
    asteroids. When we are listening for faint extraterrestrial radio
    signals on all frequencies in all directions at all times.

    But I think he's been upstaged by a different British author, Charles
    Stross. His _Palimpsest_ postulates a society of time travelers who
    record several *trillion* years of history, most of it still in our
    future. They record literally everything that ever happens.

    What's more, they record not just one version of it, but millions of
    alternate versions of it.

    They store all of these videos in a library at the end of time. All
    of Earth's carbon has been (will be) repurposed. It's turned into
    diamonds. Carbon has two stable isotopes, C13 and C12. You can use
    them to store binary data, a mole of bits for every 12.5 grams of
    carbon. A single mole of bits can store about 2 billion years of
    high definition video. And there is rather a lot of carbon on Earth.
    So the math works out.
