At last night's PRSFS meeting, I was told that the Hunt Valley Hotel
was being demolished. I had been to ten Balticons and one Chesiecon
in that hotel, which had hosted many cons over the decades. It was a
good hotel, in that it was accessible by mass transit (a short walk
from the Pepper Street Baltimore Light Rail station), and had free
parking, so it was accessible to both motorists and transit users.
It had plenty of function space, including an abandoned restaurant
which made a perfect con suite. I'll miss it.
PRSFS spun off from WSFA (founded in 1947) in 1975. Starting in 2020,
due to Covid, PRSFS started meeting virtually, via Zoom, rather than
meeting in members' homes. Since 2021 the meetings have been hybrid,
with some members -- including me -- attending via Zoom, and others
showing up in person. Since last night's meeting was hosted by a
retired NASA employee in his home, at my suggestion we spent the first
hour watching live coverage of the Artemis II re-entry.
Since the meeting was hybrid, we had people attending from as far away
as Thailand, on the opposite side of the ocean that hosted the
splashdown. That was interesting. We discussed the new backlit moon
photo, which had been taken from Artemis II using a stock GoPro. One
seldom sees celestial bodies that are dimmer than their surroundings.
It's unclear whether it was backlit by the sun's corona or by zodiacal
light. It was partially sidelit by earthlight.
