So far it's only the games New Zealand is playing in that have stupidly
bumped the regular progammes. Hopefully New Zealand will get kicked out
soon and we can keep the regular programmes (although then there will
be weeks of morons, especially in the news media and newspaper's
letters to the editor, whining on and on about why they lost and how
people in charge should be fired).

Yep. We only recently downgraded our NZ Herald subscription from seven
days a week to just the weekend editions due to the ever-increasing
price of the newspaper, which like everything else these days has
    become ridiculously expensive. :-(

The freebie local suburban newspapers that used to be delivered twice a
week have long since disppeared (after briefly becoming online only
    versions).

That STILL feature Letters to The Editor??

Are these REAL (stick'em in an envelop and stick a Stamp on them!!)
Letters .... or just e-mail things??

Mostly they are letters emailed to the editor. There is a postal
address, so they can be real stamped-envelope letters, but due to the hopelessness of NZ Post, they probably wouldn't arrive at the newspaper offices until six months after the events in the letter have long been forgotten about. :-\

(although then there will be weeks of morons, especially in the
news media and newspaper's letters to the editor, whining on and
on about why they lost and how people in charge should be
    fired).

Sorry! WHAT?? NZ still have Newspapers?? ....

Yep. We only recently downgraded our NZ Herald subscription from seven
    days a week

WHAT?? 'Seven days a week"?? Back in the Day (60's-70's) when I used to deliver newspaper (both Morning and Evening) we had six days a week
(Monday to Saturday) then an independent mob tried to sell a Sunday
Morning newspaper ... but it never really took off!

Back in 70-80's the one company produced one of the morning papers (The
Sun) and the evening paper (The Herald) (in Melbourne, Victoria) ....
but then, in the mid-80's maybe, they tried to combine them and produce
a two or three edition per day newspaper.

Don't know what happened to that.

Technically, "The New Zealand Herald" is sold on weekdays, "The Weekend Herald" is sold on Saturdays, and the "Herald on Sunday" is sold on
Sundays. It is the main newspaper brand in the country*, with both the
daily printed newspapers and news website.
[* At least the upper half of the country, where most of the population is.]

There are various other printed newspaper brands around the country,
including the Sunday Star-Times only sold on Sundays (surprise!) in the
wider Auckland city region. The Dominon Post and The Press are two
    others further south.

The World Cup Final will almost certainly be shown live on one

No doubt all the games are playing on a Sky TV sports channel, and TVNZ

Today's daily joke from the Grownups.co.nz website ...

Neymar goes into the Brazilian changing room to find all his
team mates looking a bit glum. "What's up?" he asks.

"Well, we're having trouble getting motivated for this game.
We know it's important, but it's only England. They're easy
and we can't be bothered," they reply.

Neymar looks at them and says, "Well, I reckon I can beat
them by myself, you lads go down the pub."

So Neymar goes out to play England by himself and the rest of
the Brazilian team go off for a few beers.

After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so get
the landlord to put the TV on. A big cheer goes up as the
screen shows 'Brazil 1 (Neymar, 10 minutes) - England 0'

He is beating England all by himself!

A few more beers later and the game is forgotten until
someone remembers, "It must be full time now, let's see how he
    got on."

They put the TV on. "Result from the Estadio Do Maracana:
    Brazil 1 (Neymar, 10 minutes) - England 1 (Rooney 89, minutes)."

They can't believe it, he has single handedly got a draw
against England! They rush back to the Stadium to congratulate
    him.

They find him in the dressing room, still in his gear, with his
head in his hands. He refuses to look at them. "I've let you
all down, I've let you all down."

"Don't be stupid, you got a draw against England, all by
yourself. And they only scored at the very very end!"

"No, no, I have, I've let you all down! I got sent off after
    12 minutes."

    :-p

    :-p

You could have least have changed the names to make it relevant
to the 2026 World Cup... Wayne Rooney hasn't played for England
    in nearly ten years!!!

His fat face is now part of the BBC World Cup coverage... from
a studio in Manchester as the BBC can't afford to fly their
panelists to the USA. (I reckon they should put the licence fee
up in time for the 2030 tournament.)
