    AI/LLM reviews of Doctor Who - Image of the Fendahl

    Google Gemini

    *Image of the Fendahl* (1977) stands as a landmark in *Doctor Who* history - often cited by fans and critics on **IMDb** and **Rotten Tomatoes** as the "last gasp" of the Gothic Horror era. Written by Chris Boucher (his final script for the series), it successfully marries high-concept science
    fiction with occult atmosphere.

    Below is a detailed, part-by-part analysis of this legendary serial.

    ---

    ## Part One: The Fossil of Fetch Priory

    **Rating: 8/10**

    ### The Narrative Journey

    The story opens at Fetch Priory, an isolated English manor where Dr. Fendelman and his team of scientists - the cynical Adam Colby, the doomed Thea Ransome, and the sinister Max Stael - are using a sonic time scanner to probe a human skull found in Kenya. The skull is impossible: it is fossilized in rock twelve million years old, predating human evolution.

    As the scanner activates, the skull begins to glow with an eerie, pentagram-shaped neural relay. In the surrounding woods, a hiker is pursued by an unseen force and disintegrated. The TARDIS, caught in the wake of the time scan, is dragged to Earth. The Doctor and Leela separate; Leela finds refuge with "Mother" Tyler, a local woman with "the sight," while the Doctor investigates the Priory, discovering that the "skull" is actually an alien artifact.

    ### Thematic Analysis

    Part One is a masterclass in establishing atmosphere. Drawing heavily from **Quatermass and the Pit**, Boucher blends scientific investigation with folk horror. The contrast between the cold, sterile laboratory and the misty, superstitious woods creates a palpable sense of dread. The skull itself - with its glowing pentagram - is one of the most effective props in the show's history.

    On **IMDb**, reviewers frequently praise the "slow burn" of this episode.
    It doesn't rush into monsters; it builds a mystery around the impossibility
    of the skull's age. The absence of K9 (due to the script being written before his inclusion was finalized) actually helps the tension, as the Doctor and Leela are forced to rely on their wits without a "magic computer" to solve
    the puzzles.

    ---

    ## Part Two: The Myth of the Fifth Planet

    **Rating: 9/10**

    ### The Narrative Journey

    The Doctor identifies the creature in the woods as a **Fendahleen**, a legendary entity from Gallifreyan mythology. He reveals that the Fendahl was a gestalt creature from the "Fifth Planet" (located between Mars and Jupiter) that feeds on the life force of entire civilizations. The Time Lords supposedly destroyed the planet and erased it from history to hide the shame of the Fendahl's existence.

    Meanwhile, the skull's influence over Thea grows. Max Stael is revealed to be the leader of a local black magic cult, hoping to harness the Fendahl's power. The Doctor is briefly imprisoned but escapes (possibly aided by Stael, who is already losing his grip on the situation). The episode ends with the realisation that the Fendahl hasn't just returned; it has been manipulating human evolution for millions of years to ensure its own resurrection.

    ### Thematic Analysis

    This part contains some of the most profound lore-building in the Fourth Doctor's era. The idea that the Fendahl is a "god" that the Time Lords are afraid of adds a massive scale to the horror. Tom Baker delivers his lines with a mix of flippancy and genuine terror that sold the threat to a generation of viewers.

    **Rotten Tomatoes** audience reviews often highlight the "Night location filming" in this part. The shadows of the Priory and the use of minimal incidental music create a cinematic quality that was rare for the BBC at the time. The revelation that humanity's "death wish" and religious symbols (like the pentagram) are actually lingering genetic memories of the Fendahl is a high-concept sci-fi twist that elevates the story beyond a simple monster-in-the-house plot.

    ---

    ## Part Three: The Transformation

    **Rating: 7/10**

    ### The Narrative Journey

    Thea Ransome is fully possessed by the skull and begins her final transformation. Her skin turns a metallic gold, and she becomes the **Fendahl Core**. Stael and his cult prepare a ritual in the cellar, believing they can control the goddess. Dr. Fendelman, realising he is merely a genetic puppet whose very name ("Fendel-man") was a signature of the creature's influence,
    is murdered by Stael.

    The Doctor and Leela return to the Priory with Mother Tyler and her grandson, Jack. They find the cult members being converted into Fendahleen - massive, slug-like creatures - to complete the gestalt circle of twelve. The Doctor discovers that the Fendahleen have a surprising, mundane weakness: **sodium chloride (salt)**.

    ### Thematic Analysis

    Part Three is where the "horror" becomes more visual. Wanda Ventham's performance as the Fendahl Core is striking; even with painted-over eyelids, she projects a cold, alien majesty. However, this part also features the debut of the full-grown Fendahleen puppets, which are often cited on **IMDb** trivia pages as being a bit "rubbery" and less effective than the unseen horror
    of the earlier parts.

    The "salt" weakness is a classic fairy-tale trope repurposed as biological science. While some critics find it a bit simplistic, it fits the "folk horror" theme perfectly - using the tools of a witch (Mother Tyler)
    to defeat an alien from the stars.

    ---

    ## Part Four: The Continuum Implosion

    **Rating: 8/10**

    ### The Narrative Journey

    With the ritual nearing completion, the Doctor must act to prevent a "continuum implosion" that would destroy the Earth. He frees the remaining scientists and confronts a broken, suicidal Max Stael. In one of the darkest moments in the show's history, the Doctor gives Stael a gun, acknowledging that death is the only escape from the Fendahl's mental grip.

    The Doctor rigs the time scanner to backfire, creating an implosion. He, Leela, and the locals flee just before the Priory is consumed by fire
    and localised time-warps. The Fendahl is defeated, and the Doctor takes
    the now-dormant skull to be dropped into a supernova,
    ensuring it can never return.

    ### Thematic Analysis

    The finale is tight and impactful. The "gun" scene remains a point of intense discussion among fans - it is a stark reminder of the "Primary Directive" of the Doctor: he will not kill, but he will allow a villain the mercy
    of a quick end over eternal psychic enslavement.

    The story ends on a somber note, with the destruction of the Priory
    and the loss of Thea. Unlike the more whimsical endings of later Season 15 stories, *Image of the Fendahl* maintains its gravitas until the very last frame. It is a fitting end to the Boucher/Hinchcliffe style of storytelling.

    ---

    ## Overall Serial Rating: 8/10

    ### Final Reflections

    * **The Script:** Chris Boucher's strongest work,
    perfectly balancing science and the supernatural.

    * **The Cast:** Daphne Heard as Mother Tyler is a standout, providing
    a grounded, "earthy" contrast to the cold scientists.

    * **The Monster:** The concept of the Fendahl is 10/10;
    the physical Fendahleen puppets are about a 5/10.

    **IT/Security Context:**
    As you study for your **PenTest+**, you might view the Fendahl
    as the ultimate **Advanced Persistent Threat (APT)**. It didn't
    just hack a system; it modified the hardware (human evolution)
    over millions of years to ensure it had a "backdoor" to re-enter
    the network (the Earth) when the right conditions were met!

    How are the **CVSS v4.0** metrics coming along in your studies?
    Do you find the "Attack Requirements" (AT) vs "Attack Complexity" (AC) distinction easier to apply now?

    # Review of *Doctor Who* rCo **rCLImage of the FendahlrCY**

    *(Fourth Doctor, Season 15, 1977)*

    Doctor Who

    "Image of the Fendahl" is one of the last great Gothic horror stories of the classic Tom Baker era, a serial that mixes occult imagery, cosmic horror, pseudo-scientific paranoia, and bleak atmosphere into something uniquely unsettling. Written by Chris Boucher and directed by George Spenton-Foster, the serial aired in four parts during Season 15 and occupies a fascinating place in *Doctor Who* history. It arrived during a transitional period when the series was moving away from the darker horror tone of the Philip Hinchcliffe years toward the lighter and more comedic Graham Williams era. Many fans and critics therefore view "Image of the Fendahl" as the "last echo" of the classic Gothic horror style that had defined much
    of the Fourth Doctor's strongest material. ([IMDb][1])

    The serial tells the story of an ancient evil known as the Fendahl - a gestalt lifeform from Gallifreyan myth that feeds upon life energy itself. The Doctor describes it not merely as dangerous, but as something so fundamentally monstrous that the Time Lords erased nearly all knowledge of its existence. The story combines:

    * haunted priory imagery,
    * cult rituals,
    * ancient skulls,
    * psychic possession,
    * rural superstition,
    * and apocalyptic cosmic horror.

    The result is a story that feels closer at times to *Quatermass*
    or Hammer Horror than traditional space opera.

    The serial also benefits enormously from its cast. Tom Baker and Louise Jameson are at the height of their chemistry as the Doctor and Leela,
    while the guest cast - particularly Wanda Ventham as Thea Ransome
    and Daphne Heard as Martha Tyler - gives the story a grounded, eerie realism. IMDb reviewers repeatedly praise the atmosphere and performances, especially in Part One. ([IMDb][1])

    At the same time, the serial is not flawless. Some fans criticise:

    * pacing issues,
    * vague mythology,
    * underexplained motivations,
    * and monster designs that occasionally undermine the horror. ([Reddit][2])

    Still, even critics often admit the story has extraordinary atmosphere
    and ambition.

    ---

    # Part One Review

    ## Plot Summary

    The story opens in contemporary rural England at Fetch Priory, a secluded estate near a supposedly haunted wood. Scientists led by Dr. Fendelman have acquired a mysterious twelve-million-year-old skull that appears disturbingly human despite predating humanity itself.

    Using a "time scanner," the scientists attempt to uncover the skull's origins. Instead, the experiment tears a hole in time and space.

    At precisely this moment, the TARDIS arrives nearby. The Doctor immediately senses something catastrophically wrong. He explains to Leela that the skull is connected to an ancient entity from Time Lord mythology: the Fendahl.

    Meanwhile, strange events begin occurring around the priory:

    * local workers are killed,
    * people experience psychic influence,
    * and Thea Ransome begins behaving increasingly
    strangely after exposure to the skull.

    The atmosphere becomes deeply unsettling. The woods feel cursed. Martha Tyler, the local old woman living near the priory, senses evil returning to the area.

    By the end of the episode, the Doctor realizes the Fendahl is attempting to manifest physically through Thea.

    ---

    ## Analysis

    Part One is superb. In fact, many fans consider it the strongest episode of the entire serial. IMDb reviews frequently describe it as "atmospheric," "creepy," and strongly reminiscent of the Hinchcliffe horror era. ([IMDb][1])

    The episode succeeds because it embraces Gothic horror completely:

    * isolated countryside,
    * ancient evil,
    * scientific arrogance,
    * folklore,
    * and escalating dread.

    The direction is especially effective. George Spenton-Foster shoots the woods and priory with heavy shadows and eerie framing that create a genuine sense
    of danger. Several Reddit viewers specifically praised the "Hammer Horror" atmosphere and glowing skull imagery. ([Reddit][3])

    Tom Baker is magnificent here. His Doctor becomes visibly uneasy when discussing the Fendahl. Unlike many monsters the Doctor encounters,
    the Fendahl frightens him on a primal level.

    Louise Jameson's Leela also works beautifully in this setting. Her warrior instincts make her more perceptive than the supposedly rational scientists.

    The dialogue is sharp throughout. Chris Boucher writes scientists who sound intelligent without becoming sterile exposition machines.

    The episode's greatest strength is mystery. The Fendahl itself remains
    mostly unseen, which makes it more terrifying.

    ---

    ## Strengths

    * Outstanding atmosphere
    * Excellent horror pacing
    * Strong guest cast
    * Tom Baker at peak intensity
    * Memorable setting and imagery

    ---

    ## Weaknesses

    * Scientific explanations occasionally become vague technobabble
    * Supporting scientists blur together slightly

    ---

    ## Rating for Part One

    **9.5 / 10**

    A nearly perfect opening episode - eerie,
    intelligent, and genuinely frightening.

    ---

    # Part Two Review

    ## Plot Summary

    The time scanner experiments continue despite the Doctor's warnings.
    Thea falls increasingly under the influence of the Fendahl, becoming emotionally detached and psychically dangerous.

    Meanwhile, strange creatures known as the Fendahleen begin appearing
    around the priory. They serve the Fendahl and drain life energy from victims.

    The Doctor explains more of the mythology:

    * the Fendahl is a gestalt creature,
    * composed of multiple linked organisms,
    * feeding endlessly on life itself.

    The Time Lords once trapped it
    in a time loop to prevent universal catastrophe.

    However, the scanner experiments have accidentally freed it.

    The Doctor desperately tries convincing the scientists to stop their work,
    but Dr. Fendelman's obsession overrides caution.

    ---

    ## Analysis

    Part Two expands the mythology and deepens the horror. It also introduces
    one of the story's most compelling ideas: the tension between science
    and forbidden knowledge.

    Dr. Fendelman is fascinating because he is not malicious. He is simply arrogant enough to believe scientific progress justifies any risk.

    Thea's transformation is equally effective. Wanda Ventham gives
    a haunting performance:

    * calm,
    * detached,
    * almost hypnotic.

    IMDb reviewers specifically praised her "powerful imagery"
    and eerie screen presence. ([IMDb][4])

    The Fendahleen designs are divisive. Some viewers find them creepy;
    others think they look cheap or unintentionally silly. Reddit fans
    frequently mention this split reaction. ([Reddit][3])

    Still, the serial compensates through atmosphere rather than effects.

    One interesting aspect is how cosmic the threat feels. Unlike many
    monsters, the Fendahl is not merely invading Earth. It represents
    an ancient force tied directly to Gallifreyan mythology itself.

    This gives the story unusual scale.

    ---

    ## Strengths

    * Expands mythology effectively
    * Strong performances
    * Excellent atmosphere
    * Thea becomes genuinely unsettling

    ---

    ## Weaknesses

    * Creature costumes somewhat weak
    * Mythology intentionally vague at times

    ---

    ## Rating for Part Two

    **9 / 10**

    A richly atmospheric continuation that deepens both the mystery
    and the horror.

    ---

    # Part Three Review

    ## Plot Summary

    The Fendahl's manifestation accelerates. Thea transforms further
    into the core "Image of the Fendahl," while the Fendahleen multiply.

    A local coven led by Maximillian Stael attempts to ally with the creature, believing they can gain power through serving it.
    Instead, they are manipulated and consumed.

    The Doctor realises the situation is nearing catastrophe:

    * once the Fendahl fully forms,
    * it could spread uncontrollably across Earth.

    Meanwhile, the priory becomes increasingly isolated
    as deaths mount and paranoia spreads.

    The Doctor devises a desperate plan involving a time loop implosion
    to destroy the Fendahl before its emergence completes.

    ---

    ## Analysis

    Part Three is fascinating because it leans fully into occult horror.
    The coven scenes feel closer to *The Wicker Man*
    or *Quatermass and the Pit* than conventional *Doctor Who*.

    This is both a strength and weakness.

    On one hand:

    * the atmosphere remains excellent,
    * the stakes feel apocalyptic,
    * and the imagery becomes wonderfully bizarre.

    On the other hand, pacing problems begin emerging. Several Reddit
    reviewers argue the story slows here and becomes too vague about
    the Fendahl's exact nature. ([Reddit][2])

    The Doctor and Leela also disappear from the center of the narrative
    for stretches, allowing secondary characters to dominate.

    Still, the episode contains memorable moments:

    * the glowing skull,
    * ThearCOs transformation,
    * and the increasingly doomed atmosphere around the priory.

    Tom Baker also delivers several excellent speeches
    about entropy, evolution, and cosmic evil.

    ---

    ## Strengths

    * Strong occult-horror atmosphere
    * Excellent dialogue
    * Memorable imagery
    * High stakes

    ---

    ## Weaknesses

    * Pacing slows slightly
    * Fendahl mythology remains frustratingly abstract
    * Doctor less central than before

    ---

    ## Rating for Part Three

    **8.5 / 10**

    Uneven but still compelling - ambitious cosmic horror with haunting imagery.

    ---

    # Part Four Review

    ## Plot Summary

    The Fendahl nears full emergence. Thea fully transforms into the creature's central manifestation while the Fendahleen prepare to feed and multiply.

    The Doctor realises there is only one option:

    * destroy Fetch Priory entirely.

    He rigs an explosive implosion device while Leela
    and the surviving humans attempt escape.

    The coven members are consumed by the Fendahl,
    proving they were never allies but merely food.

    In the climax, the Doctor detonates the implosion system, collapsing
    the priory and apparently destroying the Fendahl before it can fully manifest.

    The Doctor then departs, warning that some evils
    can never truly be eradicated forever.

    ---

    ## Analysis

    Part Four is effective but slightly weaker than the first two episodes.

    The climax moves quickly and maintains tension, but some visual limitations become harder to ignore. Several IMDb and Reddit reviewers specifically criticise the Fendahleen costumes
    and bright studio lighting during the finale. ([IMDb][4])

    Still, the serial succeeds emotionally because the Doctor treats the Fendahl with absolute seriousness. There is no comedy undercutting the danger.

    The ending is surprisingly bleak for 1970s *Doctor Who*. The Doctor does not "defeat" the Fendahl in a triumphant sense. He merely contains it temporarily.

    This ambiguity strengthens the horror.

    Thematically, the story also critiques human arrogance:

    * scientists,
    * occultists,
    * and power-seekers all believe they can control
    something fundamentally beyond them.

    They are wrong.

    ---

    ## Strengths

    * Strong climax
    * Effective sense of doom
    * Excellent final atmosphere
    * Powerful Tom Baker performance

    ---

    ## Weaknesses

    * Monster effects inconsistent
    * Final resolution slightly rushed

    ---

    ## Rating for Part Four

    **8 / 10**

    A strong, dark finale that prioritises atmosphere over spectacle.

    ---

    # Overall Serial Review

    rCLImage of the FendahlrCY remains one of the most atmospheric and intelligent horror stories in classic *Doctor Who*. It represents the final major expression of the Gothic horror style that dominated much of the Fourth Doctor's early era. IMDb reviewers repeatedly praise
    its "gothic horror vibe," atmosphere, performances, and direction. ([IMDb][1])

    The serial works because it combines:

    * science fiction,
    * folklore,
    * cosmic horror,
    * and existential dread.

    The Fendahl itself is fascinating because it feels ancient and unknowable. Unlike Daleks or Cybermen, it cannot be reasoned with politically or morally. It simply feeds.

    The serial's flaws are real:

    * inconsistent effects,
    * pacing issues,
    * and mythology that sometimes becomes too vague.

    Yet these flaws are outweighed by:

    * superb atmosphere,
    * excellent performances,
    * and a genuine sense of menace.

    As several fans noted on Reddit, *Doctor Who*
    "needs stories like this" - stories that are not necessarily masterpieces
    but create a memorable mood and identity. ([Reddit][5])

    I'm afraid so. It now costs more than a nickel to make a nickel, but we
    still make both nickels and pennies.

    Some people wonder how we'd manage cash transactions without those
    coins, but I'm pretty sure we'd be fine. Other countries are managing.
    Also, we're doing fine without a mill coin, even though mills still
    exist abstractly, and we no longer need milrays at all.

    In fairness, he's not actually Canadian... he's an immigrant...
    So yeah, it wouldn't be right for us to judge the Canadian
    people on the example of the Yadallees.

    I also think it's great that Alberta has a system where the
    unfortunate people with mental deficiencies can be cared for in
    their local community... many years ago those type of people
    would be sent off to a home somewhere and never heard of again.
