HAMTRAMCK, MI -- The Hamtramck City Council voted unanimously Tuesday
night to ban Pride flags and other symbols from being flown on city
property, which includes City Hall, parks, libraries, schools and other
city buildings. According to WDIV-Detroit, the council approved the
resolution -- which also bans any religious, ethnic, racial, political, or sexual orientation group flags -- following a lengthy public comment
session.
The only flags approved for display on city property are the United
States, the State of Michigan, the City of Hamtramck, POW/MIA and the
flags of other nations.
Prior to the vote, Mayor Amer Ghalib and other members of council
commented on the resolution to say that it was not targeted at one
specific group, but at the practice in general, reasoning that if the city flies one of the flags, it has to fly the others as well.
