I recommend Fred Saberhagen's _Some Events at the Templar Radiant_ on this subject.

I have no idea. The details were never released to the public. There
has always been rumors that we put nukes in orbit after Operation
Fishbowl but nobody wants to talk about them. One of these tests EMP'd
a portion of Hawaii in Operation Starfish.

I think he's talking about Star Wars/ High Frontier, whatever it's called.
It wasn't putting nukes into orbit... it was proposed in order to keep
nukes OUT of orbit or high atmosphere.

And, it might have worked... and it might not have... and it might have advanced software engineering technology if it had been done right. But
it was never even prototyped let alone built, because the Russians ran
    out of money first.

The 'Star Wars' program was mostly cancelled after the USSR fell -
there was no longer a need for it. Some research continued, but afaik
    nothing was put in orbit.

However, one of Edward Teller's proposed weapons was an orbital,
nuclear pumped X-ray laser, in Project Excalibur.
