In Japan where there are many volcanoes and lots of Hot Springs
this has been made reality. Many small cities and town depend on
geothermal water and make lots of money. One island features beaches
of hot sand where people immerse themselves for supposed health
    benefits.

In New Zealand, the area around Rotorua* has a lot of thermal activity.
People relax in the hot pools and mud baths, food is cooked in
in-ground pits (called hangi in Maori) or boiled in the hot water, etc.
    - some of the water and mud pools are literally boiling, so people
cannot swim in them. The main problem is that all the sulphur means it
    can stink like rotten eggs.

Yep. There's a place about 40-60mins drive north of Auckland, New
Zealand called "Waiwera Thermal Pools". The place went bankrupt some
years ago, but new owners are planning on re-opening it as "bigger and better". The problem is that it's in a tiny river estuary village with
a few dozen houses and a small camping / caravan park, so it's not a
great place for a tourist attraction.

Sounds like they need a hotel or two.
