    ADVENTURES #425

    =====================
    Particle Man #3
    =====================

    Particle Man #3

Particle Man wandered the corridors of Legion headquarters aimlessly.
"Gods, but I'm bored," he sighed. Ever since Master Blaster had disappeared, he'd had almost no one with whom to talk, and his chances
of learning "mack-daddy vibes" were cut to zero. "That party would've
been the perfect time to get to know some of the lovely ladies of the
Legion. He stopped and paused for a moment, confused, before he noticed
that he had wandered past aLLiterative Lass's room. "She must be
practicing," he muttered as he wandered on. Each footstep echoed
emtptily down the equally empty halls. He'd heard something about a
meeting of some sort. However, since he hadn't been invited, he chose
not to go. Besides, it was about "WC" and "NWC", and he never could get
    those two straight.
"Hi, Particle Man!" Sing-Along Lass greeted him cheerily as she
    walked up to him.
    "Oh, hi, Sing-Along Lass."
"Why weren't you at the meeting earlier?" she asked. "It was really interesting, until the lecturer got kind of weird near the end."
    "Oh, really?"
"Yeah, he started talking about how the WC's don't appreciate us
NWC's, and how we don't do anything when we're not in a story."
"Where are you going?" Particle Man asked. "We can walk there while
    we talk."
"Oh, that's a good idea! I'm going to visit Kid Kirby in his lab."
As they walked the route to the lab, Particle Man asked, "So, what
do you do when you're not in a story?"
    "What do you mean?"
    "I mean, What's your job?"
"Well...I'm the herald of Kid Kirby!"
    "What does that mean?"
"Hmm. I'm not sure. I'll ask him when I get there." The rest of
the walk was shrouded in an uneasy silence.

"That's got it!" Doctor Stomper exclaimed as he jumped back from the Kirbian device he'd been examining.
"Indeed," Kid Kirby agreed, deftly navigating the clutter of
machinery to observe. "He who is the wielder of the 'Power Kirby' is
most impressed. Never before has a spin 3 boson been so captured. Send
for Particle Man, quickly, I say, for only he, of all the Legion, is
capable of confirming our theories! But someone approaches the door to
my mighty laboratory. Open the door and bid them enter!" Doctor
Stomper opened the door, admitted Sing-Along Lass, and grabbed Particle
Man before he had a chance to leave.
"Please come in, Particle Man," he requested. "Kid Kirby and I have
some problems that you as a macroscopic particle might help us solve.
Come over here by the boson tranfixer, and we'll talk."

"Kid Kirby?" Sing-Along Lass asked, gaining the attention of the
    Cosmic One.
    "Yes?"
    "What's my job?"
"Why, you are the Herald of Kid Kirby, of course. You share in the
'Power Kirby' that binds all things of the comic medium."
    "No, what does that entail?"
"Well, were I to attend any functions of a cosmic nature, like an
audience with Alt.Lactus, then you would announce me. That sort of
    thing."
    "That's it? I'm your servant?!"
    "Carina, listen..."
"No, you listen, Mr. Cosmic High-and-Mighty! If you can't
acknowledge me as being at least an equal, then don't bother speaking to
me! Maybe the guy at that meeting was right!" With that, Sing-Along
Lass ran from the lab, leaving Kid Kirby staring after her.
"What was that about?" Doctor Stomper asked. "She sounded upset."
    "It was...nothing," Kid Kirby responded.
"Maybe you should follow her," Particle Man suggested.
"We are linked by the 'Power Kirby', she and I. When she is in
grave danger, I shall know, and woe be to he who would harm the herald of...'Kid Kirby'!"
"Umm...yeah," Particle Man replied. "Anyway, Doctor Stomper was
telling me about the experiment you guys thought of. It's interesting,
to say the least. Using me, a macroscopic particle, to explore the
possibility of truth in the multiple worlds theory of Quantum Physics."
"Your youthful demeanor belies your intellect," Kid Kirby said.
"Perhaps you should spend more time in the laboratories of Doctor
Stomper and myself, for you would make a fine comic-book scientist."
"No, thanks. It's just a hobby of mine."
    Kid Kirby shrugged. "Very well."
"If you'll just stand in this circle," Doctor Stomper requested,
gesturing toward a circle of circuitry beneath a hanging apparatus in
the middle of the lab. As soon as Particle Man was in position, the air
around him took on a momentary shimmer.
"What was that?" Particle Man asked.
"It's just a force field," Doctor Stomper explained. There are some
forces that you won't feel that could rend me into a subatomic dust, and
we need you to be isolated."
*Blue Canary, where are you?* Particle Man thought, activating his
    link with his avian advisor.
*I am here, in the little birdhouse in your soul. Is there trouble?*
*No. I just feel better with you close by.*
"Are you all right?" Doctor Stomper asked, momentarily looking up
    from his control panel.
"Fine," Particle Man responded. "What now?"
"Okay, I want you to expand your Heisenberg effect outward to the
force field." Particle Man began to blur as he spread his probability
outward. "That's wide enough! We don't want you tunnelling through the
force field. Now, hold that just the way it is. Kid Kirby and I will
    take care of the rest."
"I hope that this doesn't take long, because I can't hold this up
forever!" Particle Man commented. "You're compensating for the fact
that my energy and time span can't be measured at the same time, right?"
"Yes, and your position and momentum can't be measured at the same
time, either," Doctor Stomper replied. "Relax. Oh, by the way, you may
feel a slight distortion of time."
"A what?" Particle Man asked before a wrenching pain unlike any he'd
felt before seized him. He looked out and saw the image of the two
scientists frantically working fade away before he fell unconscious.

Particle Man awoke to find himself surrounded by a slagged mass of
    metal.
"What the...? Where am I? Blue!"
"Yes?" Blue Canary asked, suddenly perched upon Particle Man's shoulder.
    "What happened?"
"I'm as much at a loss as you, I'm afraid."
    "You don't know?"
"No, I'm afraid that I don't. However, perhaps if we were out of
    this room of slag..."
"I get the idea," Particle Man declared. "We'll need a crane!"
With that, a large crane with a wrecking ball appeared and smashed a
large hole in the wall, then disappeared." Particle Man stepped out
through the hole and was stunned by what he saw. As far as the eye
could see, the ground was a scorched mass of fused debris.
Occasionally, he could see the shattered remains of a building blown
apart and melted almost beyond all recognition. The dark brown sky was
dimly illuminated by a deep orange sun that looked too big.
"Where...?" Particle Man managed to choke out.
"I think you know," Blue Canary suggested.
"This looks like Netropolis, but it's not, it can't be!" Particle
Man exclaimed as he shook his head furiously.
    "I believe that it is."
"But that would make that twisted hulk behind me...Legion Headquarters!"
    "It appears so."
"Oh, my god.... How long was I out?!"
