#297: Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig.
[ In Tales of the LNH #296, Panta cut down the artist/inker team that
propelled her into becoming the star of the new Image title, 'Bloodkitty'.
Panta left the Net.ropolis Comics Convention, determined to return to the
LNH and be a real heroine, not a just a Image character.]
The official inspector folded his notepad with the satisfaction of a
citation
well written. That would show them! Walking down the street, using terms of endearment and cute nicknames between themselves without the proper papers
or authorization! The very nerve of some people! He carefully returned the notepad in his right breast pocket as required in the Official Universal
Office Bureaucrat's Handbook, and searched the streets of Net.ropolis for another felon.
A person stepped around a corner. The person, if that was the way she should
be classified, was single-handedly breaking more rules and regulations than
he had ever seen in any given day. He reached into his right breast pocket
for his notepad and fingered a ball-point pen. Yes sir, he was definitely
going to make his quota today. Let's see now. Not wearing the minimal amount
of clothes. Carrying a sword. Impersonation of a human being. Not having a collar or license...
* * *
The receptionist glanced at the weather outside. As he thought, the rain had just started, just as they had predicted. He was glad to be inside today,
here
at the LNH, his feet up on the desk, a copy of Old Comics Man's Avengers #15
on his lap. Things had quieted down a bit; several of the LNH'ers were off
on a mission, and the rest were either in the LNH Reading Room or in the
Peril
Room. Frat Boy and Captain Clean-up had been arguing about the menu and the effect of greasy hamburgers on LNH hallway walls.
Dark outside, the receptionist thought. Yes, there it goes. Thick, heavy
rain,
pouring out of a nearly black sky. Pity the poor fool outside on a day like this.
* * *
The receptionist slid the Fantastic Four #131 back into its mylar and opened the next bag. The sound of the front door opening caught his attention; he looked up.
A bedraggled leopard girl pushed her way inside, completely soaked. She had attempted to cover her head with a thick sheaf of papers. As the door closed behind her, the sound of the rain falling faded away. She dropped the sheaf
of
papers on the LNH threshold.
"Yes, can I help you?" The receptionist put away the comic and pulled his
feet off the desk.
"Hi, I'm Panta," the leopard girl replied, running fingers along her tail to wring out the water. "I want to return to the LNH."
The receptionist stumbled to his feet. "Miss Panta, since you've been gone, Ultimate Ninja has instigated some new rules about joining the LNH."
"What?" Panta straightened up. She was wet and the way her fur laid down on
the curves of her body made the receptionist blush.
"There'll be am exam and a workout in the Peril Room with one of the
LNH'ers.
Probably Ultimate Ninja himself; he's trying to weed out the real losers."
"Losers?" Panta said, walking up to the desk, leaving puddles on the floor.
She really wasn't wearing much at all. "What kind of losers?"
The receptionist gulped. "Big Bang Kid for example. He had a one-time power.
He could explode with a 850 megaton yield. Ultimate Ninja sent him home."
"But I've already joined the LNH once." Panta said, wiping off her face with the back of her hands. I'm a probationary member, really I am."
The receptionist blushed again. "I see. Why don't you stay with us until Ultimate Ninja decides what to do." He reached for a small box of cards and flipped through them. "Unfortunately, we're all full up at the moment. Your
old room, that is the room you inherited from Lost Cause Boy, has been given
to Easily Discovered Man Lite, up and coming sidekick. Sorry about that. We
do have a place though."
Panta placed both hands on the desk and leaned forward. "Where?"
The receptionist pulled back. The sight of a wet, furry, almost unclad,
leopard
girl that close made him nervous. "Downstairs, next to the water heater. Honestly, it's the last place open at the moment. Will that do?"
"Sure," Panta sighed. "At least it's warm and dry."
The receptionist watched the little leopard girl walk down to the hallway
and
turn the corner to the stairs. A moment later, he heard a muffled "Uff!".
Pocket Man had been going down the stairs on the way to the LNH lobby. But
just before he stepped onto the ground floor, he collided with a wet, furry object.
It took a second before he remembered this little furball - Panta. But what
was she doing here? Cold and wet? Carrying a sword on her back?
"Panta?" the man of myriad pockets said.
"In the fur," she replied, picking herself up off the floor.
"What are you doing here?" He said, checking his coat pockets and pulling
out a large blue towel with 'San Diego Marriot' written on it.
"I'm rejoining the Legion of Net.Heroes." Panta accepted the towel
and began drying herself off. "Thank you."
"Do you have something dry to wear?" Pocket Man asked. He wondered how she
had avoided catching a cold in that tiny BloodKitty costume. "Just a sec
here," he added, reaching into another pockets, "here we are." He handed
Panta a tiny packet. "One standard superhero spandex costume."
"Thanks, Poks." Panta grinned. She began peeling off her sodden costume.
Pocket Man quickly turned his back. "Err, I have to go now... I will talk
to you later." Behind his back, he could hear the sound of a chain mail
halter hitting the floor. "Later, yes, later." He hurried down the hallway
to the lobby area.
In the lobby, Pocket Man found the receptionist sorting through a sheaf of papers. The receptionist looked up. "That girl sure got herself a lot of citations from the Universal Office this afternoon."
"Citations?"
"Yep, here's one for not being on a leash, here's one for looking unhappy
while citations were being handed out, here's one for crossing the double yellow line on the sidewalk and walking in the incorrect lane and-"
They were interrupted by a loud scream of outrage. "You jezabel, you hussy!" Self-Righteous Preacher's voice said. "How could you?!"
The receptionist and Pocket Man looked at each other before staring at the rapidly approaching black-clad figure of Self-Righteous Preacher. He stormed right up to the two and shook a fist under Pocket Man's nose. "I just found that furry degenerate of yours disrobing in the hallway and I know that you probably had something to do with it. When I can prove it-"
Pocket Man interrupted the outburst. "First, she's not mine and second, what did you tell her?"
"I ordered her to her room! What is the LNH coming to when naked women are roaming the hallways?" He stalked off, shaking his fist, ranting.
"Naked women? Where?" said Master Blaster, coming out of the Peril Room.
"Oh, Self-Righteous Preacher found Panta changing in front of the stairs
and got all uptight about it," the master of pockets answered.
"Is she still there?" Master Blaster asked quickly before tearing off to
see for himself.
Pocket Man turned back to the receptionist. "Seems like old times again..."
* * *
Later, that evening, Panta stretched out in the wooden box that was her bed. The room was warm and quiet, even though it was downstairs, next to the waterheater, behind a door marked, 'Mutant Quarters'. Panta had found a
chalked pentagram on the floor, but she quickly swept it up in making the
room tidy. [The pentagram was from the summoning of STUPIDTHING, Tales of
the LNH #293]
She had started here, ever so long ago, [Back in the days of the Integrity Quest], in this very same room. Lost Cause Boy had started the infamous
Woody scandal here. Graves, the degenerate butler, had sought to imprison
her here. And Defacto, the evil editor, had tried to trick here. And now, thinking of the Dvandom Stranger's words, she was going to try and be
a heroine from this same room.
[ Next issue: The Net.Patrol gathers. Really. Or tries to. Will Panta
pass the LNH entry exam? Or will she be kicked back onto the street?
Coming soon in Tales of the LNH #298.]

#298: The Final Exam
[ In Tales of the LNH #297, Panta returned to the Legion of Net.Heroes.
She must still pass the entry exam given for new members: a workout
in the LNH Peril Room with one of the LNH'ers. That night, as related
in Pliable Lad #10, she woke to discover her room filled with boxes of
offical-looking forms.]
"Is this a private moment or can I come in and say hi?", came a voice from
the door. Pliable Lad and Tour Guide Girl looked up to see...
"Panta?"
"Oh, it is... I'm sorry." Panta looked a bit embarrassed at the sight of Pliable Lad and Tour Guide Girl sitting up on Tour Guide Girl's bed.
Pliable Lad spoke up quickly. "No, it's alright." He sat up straight. Tour Guide Girl smoothed out the indentation in the pillow.
"Errem. It's about..." Panta's tail coiled itself around her legs. "these forms..."
"What forms?" Pliable Lad said, stretching his arm across the room to take
a piece of paper from Panta's fingers.
"The forms in my room." Panta sighed.
Pliable Lad and Tour Guide Girl looked at each other. "That dream!" Pliable
Lad breathed. Tour Guide Girl looked unhappy.
"Could you tell me what to do? I've got an appointment at the Peril Room
at 10:00 and..." Panta looked confused. Her ears flickered.
"We'll find someone to handle it," Pliable Lad said firmly, dropping 'Form 1775/545G6700X: Application to use Form 455697CF/544 in place of Form 6656/3
to meet requirements of Schedule 4X, as amended for Fiscal Year XX' in the wastebasket.
Panta turned and left. Pliable Lad turned back to Tour Guide Girl who was eyeing him suspiciously. "And just who is that furball?" she asked
jealously,
"and what is she to you?"
"Err..." said Pliable Lad, wondering if he could stretch the truth alittle.
* * *
The Reading Room and Library on the 3rd floor of the LNH has alays been a
quiet place to retire and browse through the extensive and complete
collection
of comics and books. (Many gathered by Old Comics Man and Comics-Snob-Boy in earlier, simpler times.) Thus, it was quite shocking when Bad Timing Boy
burst
into the Library and shouted, "Panta's going up against Ultimate Ninja in
the
Peril Room at 10."
When Bad Timing Boy had slammed the doors shut again, voices were quietly raised, deploring the lack of consideration and dignity in the youth of
today, and wasn't that Bad Timing Boy among the worst of them. "In my time, kids knew better-" was heard from Old Comics Man near the window, before the group voted to move the discussion to the control room of the Peril Room
where they could get a better view.
"Uh, I'll be coming right along. Save me a seat, ok?" came Procrastination Boy's voice from a chair near the fireplace. He spoke into an empty room.
The control room of the Peril Room was quite crowded as the gang from the
LNH Library arrived. True to his innate powers, Parking Karma Kid had found
a chair up near the front. Next to him, Master Blaster was cleaning the
lenses of a pair of binoculars.
"This display of Male-Chauvistic-Aggressive Behavior to one of Differently Covered, Other-Than-Human Person of the Female Gender does not become you, members of the Legion of Net.HerPerChilds! Stop this at once," Politically Correct Person shouted before several LNH'ers hustled the poor person
outside.
"And I think that Ultimate Ninja's swords will make mincemeat of the kitty
and nothing that you can possibly say will change my mind." Adamant
Authority-
on-Everything stated firmly to Captain Naplam.
"Awh awh!" Typo Lad said, scrambling out of the way.
There was just the whiff of kerosene and gasoline.
"Adamant, you #^^$#%%<#@,*$%^&##*...." Captain Naplam began before igniting
his flamer and turning it full blast. Adamant Authority-on-Everything
managed
to scramble out of the way, unlike poor Cannon Fodder who took the full
blast
of Captain Naplam's flame.
Cannon Fodder got hit again as the Invisible Incendiary jumped into the
fray to defend Adamant Authority-on-Everything. Nettiquette Lad flamed them
all for not being polite about it.
Then the sprinklers came on, soaking everyone.
Down, below in the Peril Room, Deja Dude and Ultimate Ninja glanced at the yellow glow of flames coming from the control room. Panta stood quietly
behind the two, her hands wrapped around the hilt of her own sword. [
Formerly
part of her BloodKitty costume. see Tales of the LNH #296.]
When Kid Kirby opened the window of the control room booth to wave that he
was ready, Deja Dude turned back to the combatants.
"It would have been best had we not this crowd. But the test must be adminstered and quickly. The rules are simple; no cheating. Should the applicant, that is you, Panta," Deja Dude said in an aside," prove herself worthy in combat, then she may rejoin the Legion of Net.Heroes. Good Luck
to the both of you." He turned away and left the Peril Room. "And now for
that cup of coffee.
A buzzer sounded. Panta barely got her sword in place to parry the ninja's first thrust. Then she swept around and tried to cut his feet off. He
flipped
into the air, made a fingertip landing on Panta's head and dropped lightly
onto his feet again. He almost lost his head as Panta's sword snapped
through
the place where it had been. Thrust. Parry. Jump. Sweep.
Thrustparryriposte...
* * *
In the control room, Kid Kirby watched the meters and readouts carefully.
The
apparatus constructed by Contraption Man was complex, but it was very simple
to the man familar with the ways of KirbyTech!
"Kid Kirby." said Occultism Kid in greeting as he entered the control booth. "Have they finished?"
Kid Kirby glanced through the window to the Peril Room below. "No. They have exchanging blows for about fifteen minutes now."
Occultism Kid followed Kid Kirby to the window. "It does seems a fair match. The Ninja's wisdom and skill against the feline's superior dexterity."
"Ah, but watch," Kid Kirby said, smiling mysteriously.
Down below, the two combatants had backed away from each other, breathing
hard. Both had taken several cuts from close calls; Panta's left leg was swelling from a kick that the Ultimate Ninja had managed to land. Under the ninja mask, sweat ran freely. Panta's fur was streaked white with sweat, her bodysuit soaked. Their eyes met. "I'll call it a tie," Panta began," if you don't mind..."
The Ultimate Ninja stood up and nodded. "Yes, let's shake on that."
Panta raised her hand, stepped closer and smiled at the ninja. The ninja sheathed his sword, raised his hand and stepped toward the leopard girl.
Then, with his other fist, he slugged her in the stomach. Panta gasped.
Her sword fell out of her hands. Slowly, she collapsed in the ninja's arms, knocked out. "Never underestimate the cunning of the ninja." he laughed.
Still laughing, he handed Panta's unconscious body to List-Lad who had
come running into the room. "Put her to bed and put her name on the
membership
list, List Lad. That was a good fight."
With that, the Ultimate Ninja strode out of the Peril Room. Above him, he
could hear the cheers coming from the control room. That was a good fight indeed.
And luckily, outside there was no one to see him wince in pain from his
cuts and bruises... "Owwww...."
[ Next issue: The Net.Patrol gathers. Really. Or tries to. Will Panta be
a part of it? Coming soon in Tales of the LNH #299.]
