    #290: A Letter From Panta

[Note: This story takes place *after* the "Stretching the Truth" storyline
in _Pliable Lad_--assuming Pli makes it through that story alive, that is.]

[In Tales of the LNH #289, Panta was kicked out of Professor X's School for Gifted Youngsters for not having any powers adequate enough for the "modern Marvel heroine". Instead of returning to the LNH--she believes them to be crazy, with a few exceptions--she set out to find employment at a company
    that
is starting some anthropormorphic titles. A week has now passed....]

A lone figure walked up the steps leading to the front door of LNHHQ.
He was carrying a large sack, and seemed to be having difficulty keeping
    his

balance. Slung across his shoulder is a (much) smaller sack.

The man reaches the top of the steps just as the front door opens, re-
vealing a surprised Pliable Lad on the other side.
THUD! The man threw the large sack down just outside the door; he was
*not* going to carry it inside. He stood up slowly, for fear that his sore

back might not be able to take any more abuse, and looked straight at
    Pliable
    Lad.
    "Mail call.", he grunted.
"That's a lot of mail.", Pli pointed out, since Sister State-the-Ob-
vious wasn't around to do it for him.
"Very good.", the--oh, heck, you've probably figured it out by now--
mailman said sarcastically. "And it's all for that Elvis Man character,
    too!"
The mailman withdrew a small pile of mail from his shoulder sack and handed
    it
to the net.hero. "*This* covers everyone else."
The mailman turned and left, leaving Pli holding the day's mail (minus
the stuff for Elvis Man). The LNHer looked down at the sack at his feet and muttered "Y'know, maybe letting Elvis Man join wasn't such a great idea
    after
    all..."

While going through the pile of non-Elvis Man mail (henceforth known
as NEMMail), Pli was surprised to find one letter addressed to him. There
    was
no return address, but he recognized the handwriting on the envelope. It
    was
    Panta's.
Pli nearly tore up the carpet running to his room. As it was, he pas-
sed by Old Comics Man, who, upon seeing the speeding net.hero, shouted "In
    my
day, we didn't run like crazy to read our mail! No, sir, we took our time look-
ing for a good place to sit, then we took an hour opening each letter
    before

reading it! Yessir, and we had a special mail-reading room, too!"
But by this time, Pli had already reached his quarters (third floor,

too! Boy, can O-CM rant! :). Closing the door so he would have some
    privacy,
he walked over to his bed and sat down. Turning his index finger into a
    let-
ter opener, he opened the envelope and took out the folded paper inside. Unfolding the paper, he began to read...

    Dear Pli,
I'm sorry I havn't returned to LNHHQ to say goodbye,
but I have decided not to return. I just can't. Everybody
except you and Kid Anarky is...well, weird. I mean, there's
only so much cheesecake a person can take. I think I'm allergic

to it now. And I think I've seen too many pockets and shurikens

than are healthy. I just can't do it anymore. I'm looking for a

job out here in the west. There's this comics company that is

starting a line of anthropormorphic titles. I'm going to try to

get into one of those. Tell Kid Anarky he can keep the trench-
coat. Say hi to him for me. And bye. Oh, and Curly, too.
    Good luck, Pli.
    Love,
    [signed] Panta

His heart heavy, Pli set the letter on his nightstand, laid down
on his bed, and began to cry.

Curly, who had been sleeping under Pli's bed ever since Kid Anarky
kicked him out of his room, popped his head out from under it and asked

    "What's the matter?"
    "Panta's left us.", Pli sobbed.
    Curly, too, began to cry.

They both cried themselves to sleep.
