A large number of heads of the worldrCOs central banks have put out a
letter expressing support for US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome
Powell against the attacks on his professional integrity by President
Trump. This includes NZrCOs own recently-appointed Reserve Bank
Governor, Dr Anna Breman. However, our Foreign Affairs Minister,
Winston Peters, is less than pleased about her action <

First of all, why is it his responsibility? And in any case, this is
an issue that goes beyond mere partisan politics, to the very issue of
the independence of central banks worldwide, to set fiscal policy as
per their statutory remits, free from political interference. Either

Other notable signatories of the letter include the head of the
European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, and the current heads of
both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada (trivia fact: both
former jobs of current Canadian PM Mark Carney).
