All New Zealanders are equal in opportunity, rights and obligations, no change to that is acceptable.

I agree that the article makes some valid points, however it never
    mentions the following:

    1. Colonist behaviour in the decades following the signing of the
    Treaty.

The behaviour of the British Government (and the NZ Government when established) revolved entirely around military superiority and
suppression of Maori by military means. This was, in effect, the
'DNA' of British colonialism - subjugation of the 'natives'. The
wording of the Treaty of equality for Maori was totally ignored by the
British afterwards. The Treaty was a farce, much like the warrantees
offered by used car salesmen today. it is reasonable to accuse the
British Government, through the Government of New South Wales as
represented by Governor Hobson in 1840, of never intending to honour
the Treaty. Maori were never treated as equals as the Treaty
    promised.

    2. The Treaty is a product of the times in 1840 and has no legal
    relevance now.

Contracts or agreements signed, even with the Crown, are binding only
on those who signed it, not their heirs and successors.

In 1840 (as today) there was no single entity that represented all
Maoridom, so the Maori signatories to the Treaty represented small
Tribal enclaves or tribes. It was never possible to get all Maori to
    sign up to the Treaty.
