• So if Labour wins the most seats in Parliament .....

So if Labour finish up as the leading party in Parliament (ie with the
most seats, but not an absolute majority), Hipkins needs to consider
who he would prefer as his junior coalition partner(s). The Greens?
The Maori Party? Even he must cringe at those options. That leaves
who? Labour-lite of course (aka National).

Assuming National get no list MPs because (they only got 5 in 2023
with 39% of the party vote) their current list-only MPs are gone
(includes Willis) so with Luxon as Deputy PM (until he is replaced by
the new National leader), Edmonds will be Finance Minister.

This assumes that Hipkins has the mental capacity to think outside the
square. It would also mean that for the second time in the MMP era no
minor party is part of Government.

You heard this first from Crash ;-)

With much respect Crash, I hope I never hear this again and certainly not hear that it has come about.
I have voted for various parties and by no means always centre right ones, Labour candidates have received my vote in the past.
But I don't want any of the current left wing parties anywhere near governing at this time, they have all become either corrupted by dogma or irrelevant.

With due respect Tony, my prognosis was that the voters have delivered
a Labour-lead government. From a centre-right point of view it would
be far better to have National as the junior in that Government than
to have the Greens, Maori or TOP.

The reality is that both National and Labour have lost their grip as
leaders of the right and left respectively, and for the first time
this loss of direction for both has not been corrected in the lead-up
to an election. Both parties have gone too far in abandoning their
right and left wing roots to head to the centre.

National still have ideological compatibility with ACT and an ability
to tolerate NZF. With the Greens now being Watermelon by nature, the
Maori party being separatist and TOP being socialist, Labour has no
ideological mates. The Labour and National parties of today are not
    too far apart ideologically.

I told you months ago that with Nats you'll still get Labour. Only
party votes for ACT/NZF can stop this train wreck.

The minor parties have reduced the area that National and Labour can claim
as their own. This leaves a National/Labour coalition Government. However
this is not going to happen as the thought of going into partnership with
"the other side" is totally unacceptable.

So this leaves us with the case of a minority Government.
