The situation with potable water has shown many of the folks that it is a
good idea to keep the mtce up to scratch.

Never mind they (both major parties) want to do it again with roading excise, which of course pays for the roads.

Now the task is PM, is to sell this to the people. Roading is a bi-partisan area. Using it to gain votes is not the way to go in the long run.

    Further, we already have

Fuel excise tax goes into the Land Transport Fund, administered by the
NZTA. Not all of this fund is spent on roads etc. - some is spent on
pubic transport (ie bus and rail subsidies), cycle ways etc. It is
possible to maintain or increase funding of road asset maintenance
without any excise increase but this would likely require reduced
    funding in other areas.

Funny how so many people in this country have so much money that
they are calling for tax increases. The road transport operators
will just pass the cost on to us the plebs who can't pass it on
to anyone else so will have to pay yet again.
