Aucklanders are shocked -- shocked, I tell you -- to discover that
different branches of the same supermarket chain can charge wildly
differing prices for the same item -- in this case, 99-o/kg for
potatoes in one place, $4.99/kg in another place

Things not to buy at a supermarket:
* fruit and veges
* meat
* milk
Go have a look at a fruit-and-vege shop for the first and third items,
and a butcher for the meat. (I can remember when butchers sold milk as
well, but I donrCOt think they do this any more.) For the first two, you should find a wider range of choice available, and for all three,
definitely better prices. For example, here in Hamilton, you can
currently get 2|u2-litre bottles of milk for $7.50 or less from New
Save or elsewhere, whereas the supermarket price might be a dollar
more.

The big point missed is that it costs to shop around, be it in time or
money.

I routinely shop with independent food retailers, particularly
butchers and Farmers Markets, to avoid the duopoly.

But you will pay more at these places.

Not necessarily. The vendors at the Farmers market routinely price
their products below those of the duopoly - because they are selling
direct. The Butcher says he has the similar supply options as the
local duopoly outlets.
There are always products that are more expensive than at the duopoly
but usually there are good reasons for this and consumers can choose
cheap or quality.
