NEW YORK (WABC) - A New York man feels lucky to be alive after a lightning strike knocked him off his feet. He escaped without serious injuries and
went to buy a lottery ticket shortly thereafter.
Thomas Fahmy was walking to a dentist appointment around 4:30 p.m. last Thursday in Staten Island when lightning struck him in the foot. The
dramatic moment was captured on a nearby doorbell camera.
oI left the office a little bit early for that day to go to a dentist appointment, and I waited until the weather calmed down, no heavy rain. I said, aItAs my time to go,A but that happened,o Fahmy said.
After he was struck, Fahmy fell to the ground but says he never lost consciousness.
oA lot of people are asking me, aDid I lose consciousness?A No, I didnAt.
But once the lightning struck me, the initial sensations that I had
throughout my whole body were tingling, numbness, pain. I felt this
burning sensation,o he said.
Fahmy was able to get up and go to a neighborAs house for help. He was
rushed to the hospital, but doctors said he had escaped without any burns
or serious injuries, telling him just to drink fluids. He stayed overnight then was released.
oNo burns. I had multiple body exams. No burns at all,o Fahmy said. oI
went on church Sunday to say thank you God.o
And on Saturday? He made sure to buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket.
oIt was astonishing,o Fahmy said. oThat one-in-a-million chance type of an incident happened.o
The odds of being struck by lightning are actually less than 1 in a
million, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Only about 400
people are struck each year.
