#new Landlords in New York are suing Zohran Mamdani over what they call
his corrupt 'abuse of power' and manipulation of data to enact illegal
rent freezes
#newyork
They say Mamdani stacked his housing board with one-sided loyalists,
then used millions of taxpayer dollars to fill out the BoardrCOs hearings
with tenant advocates.
They are asking a court to strike down Mamdani's rent freezes on 1
million rent-stabilized apartments
The board set rent increases at 0% for both one-year and two-year leases starting on October 1.

The plaintiffs are asking the court to cancel Mamdani's order, saying it
is illegal, and the board needs to issue a new determination that takes
into consideration landlord costs, income, and economic conditions.
The complaint says the boardrCOs determination
rCLWas the result of a corrupted and compromised process: a statutory
mandate flouted and disregarded, an independent agency held captive, and
an outcome wired and predetermined from inception.rCY
Mamdani appointed five new members to the housing Board and reappointed
a tenant representative.
One landlord representative, Christina Smyth (appointed by Adams),
resigned the morning of the June 25 vote.
In her letter she said that rCLthis rebuilt board was required to deliver
a rent freezerCY and that rCLeverything since has been theater,rCY accusing the panel of starting with a predetermined answer and working backward.
Board data showed landlord operating costs rose 5.3% while net operating income rose 6.2% overall.
Plaintiffs say the board ignored or downplayed rising insurance,
maintenance, utilities, property taxes, and water/sewer bills while overstating tenant incomes and understating landlord hardship.
One plaintiff, who owns three fully stabilized buildings with about 50
units, said her portfolio is losing $172,000 each year
Another owner reported $90,000 in unpaid rent at a Bronx building; a
Queens family that has owned and managed its building since 1974 is owed $70,000, including more than $25,000 from a single tenant.
Mamdani's City Hall rejected the claims.
