• Gravity scoring

Is anyone an expert on Microplanet Gravity? I'm trying to get the
scorefile working. It works occasionally, but only once in a blue moon,
    and I can't figure out a pattern.

Usually, I still see all the stuff I'm trying to score down. This makes
one particular group very hard to read.

Most of the things I want to score away are in the body, which does
require retrieving the messages, but some are in the subject line and
    still don't work.

I guess I can always change newsreaders, but this seems like basic functionality. Is this solvable?

To be honest, I don't think it matters much what newsreader you
use for that group... you either see a lot of noise or you have
nothing to read at all. It's hard to get a happy medium there.

If I could downscore everything containing "aedo," "inky," "sswipe," and "nightcafe.studio," I'd be a happier Usenetter.

I do not use Microplanet Gravity, so all of the following
ideas were not tested by me!

To improve body scoring, what you could try is to

    - right-click the problematic newsgroup and select
    Properties;

    - look for the retrieval settings (often under Storage or
    Retrieval Options), and

    - change the setting from "Headers Only" to "Headers and
Bodies" (or create an automatic download rule for that group).

Regarding filtering in general, you could

    - open your global rules or scorefile manager (Tools >
Rules or Filters) and ensure your rule type is set to
Regular Expression and use the canonical format:
.*SpamString.* (The .* means "any characters before or
    after"), and

    - ensure Case Insensitivity is checked if you want to catch
    variations like spamword or SPAMWORD.

Gravity processes scoring rules from the top down. If you
have an earlier rule that automatically marks articles as
"Read," "Important," or "Keep," and that rule has a "Stop
Processing Rules" action attached to it, Gravity will stop
evaluating the file entirely. Your downward scoring rules
lower in the list will never be reached.

So, you can move your downward/kill scoring rules to the very
top of the list so they execute before any global visibility
    or keeping rules take effect.

There might be problems with modifying a filter file in C:\Program
Files\ on Windows. These could be alleviated moving the program to
a folder like C:\Gravity\, but this is considered to be less secure.

You may find help on Steve Gibson's site, he maintains the last version.

I went through this list, and I'm getting better results now. Thanks for
    the tips.

You might also only have three posts to read every morning when

I still had 40 RADW posts this morning, and almost all of them had
actual content! It was like a Usenet miracle.

Amazing though you may find it, alt.arts.poetry.comments is harder to
read than RADW. I'm currently developing a regexp to downscore any post
which contains a single question mark as its only new text.
