• 2nd RFD: Remove rec.arts.anime.creative

    From Big-8 Management Board@board@big-8.org to news.announce.newgroups,news.groups.proposals,rec.arts.anime.creative,rec.arts.anime.fandom,rec.arts.anime.misc on Thu Aug 6 22:13:27 2026
    From Newsgroup: news.groups.proposals

This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) to remove the
    moderated newsgroup rec.arts.anime.creative.

    Newsgroups Line:

rec.arts.anime.creative Original works by fans, related to anime/manga. (Moderated)

    Distribution:
    news.announce.newgroups
    news.groups.proposals
    rec.arts.anime.creative
    rec.arts.anime.fandom
    rec.arts.anime.misc

Proponent: Usenet Big-8 Management Board <board@big-8.org>

    Charter:

This moderated newsgroup serves as a place for the posting of fan
created works. For any anime or manga related fan work including
stories, parodies, original scripts written by fans, poems, song
lyrics, and original artwork. Only the actual fan works will be
posted here - any discussion regarding these works should be posted to rec.arts.anime.fandom.

    Rationale for removal:

The group currently has no moderator address assigned and hasn't seen
any posts since 2017. The posts from the years 2013-2017 are only FAQ
posts. The last non-FAQ post was in 2012. That means the group was
unused even when moderation was still working.

In a 2025-01-03 RFD initiated by the Board, the group was proposed for
deletion as part of a mass cull of moderated groups without a
moderator. The group was excluded from the 3rd iteration of the RFD
after someone expressed interest in moderating it. Despite repeated
queries, the Board has had no further communication from this
    potential volunteer.

As the group is unusable in its current state, it is reasonable to
    remove it.

    Discussion so far:

No comments were received in response to the first RFD to delete the
    group.

    History of the group:

    1995-11-18: 1st RFD (create; originally as rec.arts.anime.fan-works.misc) 1995-12-12: 2nd RFD (create)
    1996-01-18: 3rd RFD (create)
    1996-03-13: Result: rec.arts.anime.creative passes 292:51
2025-01-03: 1st RFD (as part of a mass deletion)
2025-02-02: 2nd RFD (as part of a mass deletion)
2025-03-11: 3rd RFD (as part of a mass deletion)
    2025-05-05: Group excluded from LCC

    Procedure:

Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup
should subscribe to news:news.groups.proposals and participate in the
    relevant threads in that newsgroup.

To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups.proposals.

All discussion of active proposals should be posted to
    news.groups.proposals.

If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the
discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken
to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups.proposals as
    well.

For more information on the newsgroup removal process, please see https://www.big-8.org/wiki/Removing_newsgroups

    History of this RFD:

    2026-07-23: 1st RFD (remove)
    2026-08-06: 2nd RFD (remove)

I agree with the proposal to remove rec.arts.anime.creative. Since there
has been no active moderation or user content for over a decade and the potential volunteer did not respond, cleanup of this unused group makes
    total sense.

Thanks to the Board for following the procedure and keeping the
    hierarchy clean.

    Hello, board~

Is the presence of a new moderator enough to
stop the removal of this group? Additionally, may
I ask for a pointer explaining what is involved in
the moderation of such a newsgroup; the workflow
and responsibilities? Depending on the nature of
the work involved, I may be interested in keeping
this group alive, and thus moderating it and maybe
encouraging people to post to it.

The moderator also needs the infrastructure to moderate the group. That
means a mailbox to receive the messages and a system to approve/reject
them. In case of approval, they need to be posted with Approved: headers
to a news server that allows that (some provide such a service).

    See above.

I can help you setting it up, but it needs some technical understanding.

As the group was empty for a long time, I have doubt there will be
    submissions in the future.

    Hello, Marco,

Thank you for the answer and offer.

I am interested in volunteering as moderator
    for `rec.arts.anime.creative'. I'm not familiar
with the process of applying for such a position,
or the workflows to handle moderation duties. I
    have come across a NetNews Moderator's Handbook[1]
on the big-8.org site, and I'm going to be reading
it to learn some more. Pointers or tips towards
specific next steps that I would need to undertake
in this process would be much appreciated. I have
programming and sysadmin experience, I run my own
servers hosting various web services and Email
infrastructure, including mailing lists for my own
consulting company, and I've been maintaining more
than a dozen software packages on slackbuilds.org
for the Slackware. In other words, I am technical
enough, I think, to handle moderation duties, and
setting up any necessary software or servers that
might be needed for the task.

As the group was empty for a long time, I have
doubt there will be submissions in the future.

Yes, I'm well aware of the possibility, but
I thought it could also be a relatively low-stakes
environment to learn the ropes of moderation, and
get a feel for the Usenet organization structure,
so I can later perhaps contribute more meaningful
help to keep the network up and running. Little
    small steps and all :)
