• RFD: Remove comp.compression.research

    From Usenet Big-8 Management Board@board@big-8.org to news.announce.newgroups,news.groups.proposals,comp.compression,comp.compression.research on Fri Mar 28 17:34:53 2025
    From Newsgroup: news.announce.newgroups

This is a formal Request for Discussion (RFD) to remove the
    moderated newsgroup comp.compression.research.

    Newsgroups Line:

comp.compression.research Discussions about data compression research.

    Distribution:
    news.announce.newgroups
    news.groups.proposals
    comp.compression
    comp.compression.research

    Proponent: Marco Moock <mm@dorfdsl.de>

    Charter:

comp.compression.research is for discussion about data compression
    research.

    Rationale for removal:

The group currently doesn't have a working moderation system, so
nobody can post. The last posts were made in 2012. Even some years
prior the on-topic traffic was very low, so reviving it is rather
    unrealistic.

The current moderator, Niels Fr||hling, communicated to the Big-8
Management Board in December 2024 that he doesn't think he can
moderate the group nowadays and that "closing the group is probably
    the best thing to do".

The unmoderated group comp.compression exists and can be
used to discuss the research of compression.

    History of the group:

    ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control/comp/comp.compression.research.gz

comp.compression.research was an unmoderated newsgroup which passed
its vote for creation by 312:10 as reported in news.announce.newgroups
on 19 Jun 1992. It was changed to moderated in 1993. It has been
    unused since 2012.

    Procedure:

Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup
should subscribe to news:news.groups.proposals and participate in the
    relevant threads in that newsgroup.

To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to news.groups.proposals.

All discussion of active proposals should be posted to
    news.groups.proposals.

If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the
discussion may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken
to ensure that all discussion appears in news.groups.proposals as
    well.
