    I got the info from the GNU people that the gnu.* hierarchy, which
    currently has non-working moderated groups, is officially sunset.

    As I recall, these were gated mailing lists, although I don't recall if
    they were moderated on the email side if one subscribed.

    Indeed, but the gateway has been broken for some years.
    The Usenet part were moderated newsgroups that sent the messages to the
    mailing list addresses.

    although I don't recall if they were moderated on the email side if
    one subscribed.

    IIRC the first posts were, to avoid spam being distributed.

    I wish what gmane/gwene was doing was available to propagate to Usenet servers wishing to carry that content, but the owner gave me a hard NO when I asked if we could discuss something like that. :-(
