• RFC: Is anyone using the FreeBSD pNFS server?

    Hi,

The current pNFS server in FreeBSD supports what
is called the tightly coupled flexible file layout.
Being tightly coupled means that the data servers (DSs)
    must be FreeBSD systems.

A company has indicated an interest in upstreaming
patches that modify this pNFS server to convert it to
what is called the loosely coupled configuration.
A loosely coupled configuration can use non-FreeBSD
NFS servers as data servers and this variant appears
    to have a wider appeal.

Now, to integrate these patches while maintaining
support for the tightly coupled variant will, I believe,
    result in pretty convoluted code.
As such, I'd like to replace the tightly coupled variant
with the loosely coupled variant, if possible.

Which brings me to the question..
Is anyone using the tightly coupled pNFS server
    right now?

And if your answer is yes, would you be willing to
convert to a loosely coupled variant for FreeBSD 16?

    Thanks for any info, rick
ps: My impression is that few, if anyone, uses the
current tightly coupled pNFS server, but I could
    be wrong.
