• Running 15.1R on Orange Pi 5 Plus, strange things

    Hi,
Last month I had issues with 15.1R on two Orange Pi 5 Plus (OP5P) devices, where git would not resolve ok for opnsense repos on github. After some time and tests, I got to figure that ARM64 was not enough to trigger it, it has to be on OP5P here. I tried more then 3 times on the OP5P and more than 3 elsewhere.
    Here are the steps:
Install 15.1R, using GPT and don't choose pkgbase
got to opnsense ports repo on github and download the ports zip.
    unzip using tar jxvf
go to pkg port directory, issue make install (make will do as well)
pkg lock pkg (say yes when asked)
use pkg to install git mc tmux
clone freebsd source repo and build world and kernel using src.conf like this: cat /etc/src.conf
    WITH_MALLOC_PRODUCTION=yes
    WITHOUT_LLVM_ASSERTIONS=yes
    WITH_LLVM_LINK_STATIC_LIBRARIES=yes
    WITHOUT_PTHREADS_ASSERTIONS=yes
clone github repo to build opnsense
run a script that clones and sets opnsense repos.
And here the main diference. On OP5P, I get some of these:
    Running build step: update

Focus on git timeouts. Sometimes can be SSL problems too.
I then tried on AMD64 boxes, FreeBSD or not. The clone runs fine.
I then created one ARM64 box over proxmox, amd64 host. its slow on compiling, but the first runs the clone fine and another got to build FreeBSD kernel and world. Again, no problem at all so far.
I then got a RPI5 here. Was the previons box, but put him aside as OP5P was faster compiling. And ther very same steps above issued no problems. I even got to build images for opnsense with no errors. I guess I had more resolving issues when building it all from sources, so some packages failed. On RPI5, all went fine.
To be sure, all installs had the same shared network, dns servers, steps to install, local usernames, all the same.
I send this message to ask if anyone have any clue on what it could be, and in case anyone has the same issues here.
If more information is needed, just tell here :)
    Thanks,
    matheus

    Hi Florian,
to install 15.1R on the Orange Pi 5 Plus (OP5P), I download the arm memstick install media and then I boot the OP5P using it on a flash drive, a hdd disk using usb to sata and serial adapter to have the console.
I use gpt labels as the usb install media has da0 and the storage has da1. Need to use usb ethernet for this.
    Once finished, just reboot.
    I use realtek-re-kmod198 for 2.5Gbps NICs.
I just reinstalled one OP5P here:
    Cloning into 'opnsense'...

    Hi,
    =20=20
    Hey Matheus,
    =20=20
    =20=20
Last month I had issues with 15.1R on two Orange Pi 5 Plus (OP=
5P) devices, where git would not resolve ok for opnsense repos on github.=
After some time and tests, I got to figure that ARM64 was not enough to = trigger it, it has to be on OP5P here. I tried more then 3 times on the O=
P5P and more than 3 elsewhere.
    =20=20
how did you get 15.1 running on the Orange PI 5 Plus? I have o=
    ne lying=20
    around, I only know about personalbsd.org http://personalbsd.o=
    rg/ and S=C3=B8ren Schmidt's 14.X=20
images. Did you build one yourself?
    =20=20
I'd be happy to test on mine, but every attempt to upgrade fro=
    m 14 to 15=20
    on mine failed.
    =20=20
    Thanks
    Florian
    =20
    Hi Florian,
    =20
to install 15.1R on the Orange Pi 5 Plus (OP5P), I download the a=
rm memstick install media and then I boot the OP5P using it on a flash dr=
ive, a hdd disk using usb to sata and serial adapter to have the console.
    =20
I use gpt labels as the usb install media has da0 and the storage=
has da1. Need to use usb ethernet for this.
    =20
    Once finished, just reboot.
    =20
    I use realtek-re-kmod198 for 2.5Gbps NICs.
    =20
I just reinstalled one OP5P here:
    =20
    Cloning into 'opnsense'...

remote: Counting objects: 100% (182/182), done.

    fatal: early EOF
    fatal: fetch-pack: invalid index-pack output
    =20
On RPI5 that was not present.
    =20
    thanks,
    =20
    matheus
    =20
And here comes the main question: Why if I take the HDD I use on OP=
5P, that shows all those errors above, and boot it on RPI5 it all runs fi=
    ne?
    =20
Tested this week, worked fine. :|
