• Migrating from 6 to SE

    From bp@bp@www.zefox.net to misc.phone.mobile.iphone on Sat Aug 15 01:25:14 2026
    From Newsgroup: misc.phone.mobile.iphone

I've been given an iPhone SE to replace an older iPhone 6.

There's no need to recover anything from the SE and
nothing on the 6 that's worth transferring. Initially I
thought it would be a matter of doing a "factory reset"
on the SE, moving the SIM card from the 6 and all done.

I did this on the 6 when I got it, the details have long
since left my memory. A quick look at the Apple Support
page suggest it was considerably more involved than I thought.

One major confusion is the difference between resetting,
recovering and restoring an iPhone. I'm not sure which
is the right term for what I'm trying to do.

My carrier is AT&T Prepaid, if that matters. The SE's
carrier was Consumer Cellular; I'm trying now to verify
    that the SE is unlocked.

If someone can suggest a reference, or a point of entry in
the Apple Support pages, it'd be much appreciated.

    Thanks for reading,

Which model of SE? There are three generations and the first one wouldn't
be worth the migration as it's only slightly newer.

On the SE, you need make sure it is completely removed from the previous owners' Apple Account. Then wiped. How that's achieved depends on the iOS version.

    https://support.apple.com/en-gb/109511

Then you can transfer your SIM and set up as new. Use the same Apple
Account details as on your old iphone.

I believe it was the last available verison of the SE. It was bought
to replace the 6 I have now, but beyond that I don't know. Looking
closely at the phone I don't see any markings on the exterior, which
is a little surprising. The old 6 has an FCC ID and an IMEI number.
The newer SE has the "bitten apple" logo but no text at all. How does
    one discover the phone details?

Far as I know it's disconnected from the old account. The SIM is out,
the donor has switched to a new carrier. Neither I nor the donor are
very fluent with Apple's ecosystem, so false starts are inevitable

I'll visit the former owner to unlock the phone. What should the
Info report if the phone's worth using? It was bought in 2020.

If it's a first generation you will be limited to iOS 15. Lotta apps
won't be usable. Gen 2 or later looks better

Not the mobile provider. The iPhone needs be removed for the original
owner's list of trusted devices in their *Apple* Account - step 10
under "Remove your personal information from your old device" on the
Apple Support page link Chris posted above.

Incorrect. It's Settings (app) -> General -> About

It'll tell you the "Model Name" there. It'll also tell you which iOS it has which is important too know for which instructions to follow for resetting
    it.

Sounds like it is a 2nd Generation model. Still fully supported by Apple
and a significant step up from an iphone 6.

If the new phone isn't on the "Hello" screen waiting for it to be set up,
then it hasn't been fully wiped and reset. Again, follow the Apple link I provided. It has all the details you need.

You are total idiot. Everybody knows in this thread that I use a German interface. But again you have to play Mr. Wisenheimer.

The OP has to be able to start the SE in the first place. For this
purpose the seller/donor has to remove it from his or her Apple account.

Reports simply iPhone SE, iOS 26.6, model MX9N2LL/A.
Does this count as new enough to be an improvement
    over the old iPhone 6?

Much better phone. It's a gen 2 SE released in 2020. The iphone 6 was
2014. I had a 6 and it was a good phone, but very limited. The SE
won't work on 5G, but is a significant upgrade over an iphone 6 in
processor speed, 3G of ram compared to 1G in the 6, and you can run iOS 26!
