• Is iOS lying to me?

It's update time on an increasingly full iphone.

I've got 10GB available storage and 26.6 is clocking in at 4.71GB. After kicking off the update, it tells me there's not enough storage to "download
the update". That's clearly not true unless one of the two values is
    incorrect. Which is it?

You do not understand the concept. End of discussion.

You likely need extra room for the decompression of the downloaded file and then the file swaps during installation.

I appreciate that, but itrCOs before all that. When it makes the decision
about decompression etc it pops up a message saying to optimise storage and make room. This message simply says it wonrCOt download as thererCOs not enough space. Even though there is.

Hi Chris, (Welcome back badgolferman, I was worried about you)...

I do not know the answer, but I think the two numbers "can" be true.
At least if we assume the 4.71 GB is not the total temporary storage
required to perform the update, where four things will consume space.

    1. The downloaded update package (4.71GB)
    2. Temp working space (as badgolferman noted) as the OS stages files
    3. Snapshot/rollback space (given iOS uses APFS snapshots for recovery)
    4. Caches and other temporary files created during installation

Googling, I've seen the requirement be double or even triple the size of
the update (i.e., for 4.71GB it could be 10 or 15GB required to install).

There may be other factors, such as the difference between a major and
point release may require substantially more side room on your device.

Since you're likely close to the limit (based on your observations)
updating through a Mac (Finder) or Windows PC (Apple Devices/iTunes) often succeeds with less free space on the phone because the update package is downloaded to the computer instead of stored entirely on the iPhone.

In summary, my tentative assessment is that what's actually happening is
that iOS is checking whether it has enough space for the entire update
process, not just the 4.71 GB download.

If I am wrong, just let me know as this is just after a bit of research.

All modern operating systems create a lot of "temporary" garbage that
can hang around (especially from web browsers, memory management
swapping, etc.). When the device is restarted, a lot of the garbage is
cleared out and storage space "magically" reappears.

Yet another good reason to shutdown and restart your devices from time to time.

Yep. It's pretty pointless leaving the device powered (even if in
low-power 'sleep' mode) on when you're definitely not going to be using
it. It just wastes battery power and means you'll have to recharge
    sooner.

One problem with mobile phones and tablets (and some other devices like
TVs) is that the "off" button doesn't actually fully turn the device
OFF, as can be seen if you plug in the charger and the screen lights up
    with the "recharging" info. :-(

Easier said than done when System Services uses 15GB or more, and apps
cache so much stuff and there's no iOS method to remove it rather than
delete and reinstall. My stuff probably only adds up to about 50GB.

    So, Great Job Apple!

Maybe you should delete some stuff to make room for future updates. Have
20GB minimum free at all times.

All modern operating systems create a lot of "temporary" garbage that >>>>> can hang around (especially from web browsers, memory management
swapping, etc.). When the device is restarted, a lot of the garbage is >>>>> cleared out and storage space "magically" reappears.

Yet another good reason to shutdown and restart your devices from time to time.

Yep. I shut all of mine down every night.

I am also not interested in my iPhone/iPads ringing at 1am. Assuming its not
just a wrong number, whatever the "news" is it can wait until 8am.

ThatrCOs why they make Do Not Disturb.

That's why they make power off/on buttons.

Yep. It's pretty pointless leaving the device powered (even if in
low-power 'sleep' mode) on when you're definitely not going to be using
it. It just wastes battery power and means you'll have to recharge
    sooner.

    Your ignorance is unbelievable.

One problem with mobile phones and tablets (and some other devices like
TVs) is that the "off" button doesn't actually fully turn the device
OFF, as can be seen if you plug in the charger and the screen lights up
    with the "recharging" info. :-(

    Stop using them.

I donrCOt think the phone has a true power off button. Besides, constantly restarting the operating system is prone to causing some other software
    glitch.
