A 20-year-old was charged in a man's death after police say she hit
him with her car while on her phone last year in Fairfax County and
then fled.
Police say Shaza Edris was driving while "actively using her
cellphone" on the morning of Dec. 23, 2025, when she hit a pedestrian
on Fairfax County Parkway near Old Plains Road and left.
Police say a passerby saw the man, later identified as Jimmy
Patterson, lying unresponsive in a grassy median. Police were called
to the scene, and Patterson was pronounced dead. Patterson was 50.
News4 video from that day shows evidence markers and police at the
scene. It wasn't immediately clear how Patterson died.
rCLHe does have visible trauma to his body,rCY said Capt. Jesse
Katzman said that day. rCLWe are not sure how that trauma occurred or
how that Individual ended up in the location that he is.rCY
rCLThe individual may have been struck by a vehicle. Of course, if
that is true, there are no vehicles that did stay on scene. That would
be a working theory,rCY Katzman said.
According to police, the driver returned to the scene that day during
the investigation, and alcohol was ruled out as a cause of the crash.
Edris turned herself in last week and was charged with felony
hit-and-run involving death and using a handheld communication device
while driving. She was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
Anyone with potentially relevant information is asked to contact
police.
