Since I use Verizon wireless my IP address puts me in a suburb of Denver. That's 900 miles from my front door.

DO NOT TRUST EVERYTHING BRAXMAN SAYS.
HE'S SPOUTED ABSOLUTE RUBBISH ON SOME SUBJECTS SUCH AS IPV6.

Though in this case he's probably more or less right.

From internet perspective, a mere IP address only expose the location of the ISP. Never the actual location of the user.

The ISP can be one of ISP's branches instead of always be the HQ, if the ISP has branches. Which one is actually used, depends on the ISP and their
    network condition.

The ISP's location is not necessarily the same as the user's location. Especially if the ISP is outside of user's city or even prefecture/province. --- Synchronet 3.22a-Linux NewsLink 1.2

But the ISP has logs and can trace back to the actual internet
connection. Even if you are out at a free wi-fi connection, the log may
also contain ID particulars about the device.

You are NEVER really anonymous on the internet. Anyone who thinks they
are anonymous is either a non-tech person or simply a deluded idiot.

For the actual location you need a court order. Then it can be found,
    but not instantly.

    That's syntactically ambiguous.

The ISP can be one of ISP's branches instead of always be the HQ, if
the ISP has branches. Which one is actually used, depends on the ISP
    and their network condition.

Depends on the provider. Modern equipment "leaks" location more
frequently and accurately than traditional dumb old routers. Especially
if one uses things like Alexa and has location enabled on their phones connected to home Wi-Fi. Another source is AirTag reporting via
    bluetooth and ultimately Wi-Fi.

The ISP's location is not necessarily the same as the user's location. Especially if the ISP is outside of user's city or even
    prefecture/province.

    Not so much anymore.

Consider this. Some ISP's are selling mobile services and using the
equipment they deploy to home consumers to provide Wi-Fi Calling / VOIP connectivity across the country. Some of those connection points have
location enabled for 911 purposes. The majority of customers have no
idea the ISP is running a publicly accessible access point on their
connection as the bandwidth use doesn't show up on their stats.

I have tried different sites that try to locate me. They show different places, but the most common is about 100 miles away.
