Apple is preparing new AI-powered photo-editing tools for iOS 27

The company is planning a major update to its built-in photo-processing features, which should help it better compete with Android-based devices.

The new features will reportedly run on the Apple Intelligence platform. The release for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 is planned for the fall. The artificial intelligence will process images directly on the device.

A new section called Apple Intelligence Tools will appear in the interface. It will include four main features: Extend, Enhance, Reframe, and Clean Up.

Extend will let users generate additional background beyond the original frame. Users will be able to expand the borders of a photo themselves using their fingers.

Enhance will automatically improve colors and lighting.

Reframe is designed for 3D photos and will let users change the angle of an already captured image.

However, development is reportedly not going entirely smoothly. During internal testing, the new tools have been unstable, which means Apple may delay their release. Existing users have also criticized the current Clean Up feature for causing distortions.

Apple is currently playing catch-up: Google and Samsung are already actively using advanced AI features on their smartphones.
