From Newsgroup: gnu.emacs.help

Having installed Debian 12 on a very old laptop I found that emacs was
using 100% cpu. It turned out to be compiling lisp to native code but
was causing the laptop fan to make much noise. The solution:

nice -n 19 emacs -nw

Emacs runs fine like this.
