From Newsgroup: comp.unix.solaris
Dear comp.sys.mac.systems, comp.unix.solaris, and comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc,
I have decided to embark on an adventure. An adventure which involves
using one of the vintage Apple computers still extant in my library, and
dual boot the /illuminated operating system/, IllumOS, specifically
Omnios, along with the venerable /High Sierra/ operating system from the
fruit vendor.
The choice of machine is fixed, and cannot be changed. Macbook Air 7,3.
I am reasonably sure it will boot High Sierra, but have not gone ahead
to download it. Nor have I downloaded Omnios for this purpose but both
should be readily available at a C.D.N. near you.
I realize the three groups I am involving in this adventure, namely, comp.sys.mac.systems, comp.unix.solaris, and comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc rarely
if ever, have spoken to each other, but we can set aside our differences
and figure this out.
First, I want to ask, /is this a solved problem/? I am currently asking
here on Usenet first, because I have developed an apathy from trying to
figure anything out where the "solution set" is inundated with stochast-
ically incorrect L.L.M. output. Everyone in the aforementioned three
groups [1] has already encountered this phenomenon, so I will not expand
on it further unless asked to.
I currently believe I will have to install /Bootcamp/ [2] to dual boot something other than a duly anointed and properly blessed by a priest,
and rabbi operating system from the /fruit vendor/. I have never done
so before, so please be gentle with me as I take my first steps in this direction.
Then I will have to figure out if OmniOS will boot. This can fail for a variety of reasons, including a kernel panic. I am no stranger to kern-
el panics when dealing with the illuminated operating system, but have
not yet bothered to figure out why the happen and fix them. This would
be my first serious attempt, if that happens.
I also realize I may need to adjust, and/or port, and/or write from
scratch a driver or three, but that should not be a serious hindrance
as I believe all the drivers needed are open source for some other oper-
ating system, but not necessarily the /fruit vendor's/, nor the illumi-
nated one.
Next to last, but also not the least [4], know that I do not have any-
thing of note on the hard disk inside the laptop. It's completely new
and is currently sporting Catalina as an operating system, which was in- stalled by the very helpful staff who sold me the hard disk, after the
original from the /fruit vendor/ gave up. I blame the /fruit vendor/
for this design oversight.
Last, but not least, if you read reader know of an active Usenet group
that did not get invited to this discussion, and would be interested in
this adventure, please speak up. This is not a quest that needs to be
kept secret from other groups of the weave [3].
Best wishes, and happy retrocomputing on vintage /fruit vendor/ devices
of magickal proportions!
[1] Unrelated to group theory in mathematics, and sci.math is not in-
cluded in this discussion.
[2] Unrelated to coding boot camps, and none of the comp.lang.* groups
are included in this discussion.
[3] So named because we are outside the web.
[4] The /penultimate paragraph/ comes to mind as a term, but we don't
expect everyone in the aforementioned three groups to have studied Latin grammar.
