• Side bar

Some pdfs (all?) have a side bar with the page count. I am looking at
very old articles that I want to magnify, so I get rid of that side bar.
Now, of course, I want to restore it on one. But I don't know how.
    How is it done?

Pretty sure what you're talking about is a feature of the PDF viewer
not the PDF itself. How to get it back would be dependent on how you
    got rid of it.

You are right of course. At top right of that panel there is
a red cross inside a small circle, and I click on that to get
rid of the panel. I am sure there is some letter I should type
in to get back but I don't know which. A sort of toggle.

It would probably help if you said which viewer you use.

Both Okular and Atril. I saw yesterday that the panel is
    called thumbnails.

On okular, Settings->Show Sidebar, and possibly the F7 key.
There's also an icon on the far left of the main tool bar, under the
menu bar, that has an arrow pointing right. Clicking that toggles
    the sidebar.

on atril there is an icon (just below the File command). If you mouse
over on it says "hide or show side pane". I just discovered it (in
general I close the thumbnails via the X whe they are open, don't like
    them)
