Some pdfs (all?) have a side bar with the page count. I am looking at
very old articles that I want to magnify, so I get rid of that side bar.
Now, of course, I want to restore it on one. But I don't know how.
How is it done?

Pretty sure what you're talking about is a feature of the PDF viewer not
the PDF itself. How to get it back would be dependent on how you got rid
of it.
You are right of course. At top right of that panel there is
a red cross inside a small circle, and I click on that to get
rid of the panel. I am sure there is some letter I should type
in to get back but I don't know which. A sort of toggle.

It would probably help if you said which viewer you use.

called thumbnails.
