    Yeah. I once imported the last two mid range units from a particular
    (Spanish) manufacturer that I could find to repair my 45 year old loudspeakers. From Australia!

    And then they didn't fit. I had to 3D print adapter rings.
    I repaired the bass and treble units with parts from China, of course

    The import from Oz was not too painful.

    I did import a Fender part for a loudspeaker from USA. Bloody expensive
    but it got here OK

    was what I saw on US Amazon the other day.

    Pi0s were supposed to be DIRT CHEAP - now
    they're "exotic", EXPENSIVE, tech. This is
    not all 'tariffs' either. Pi stuff was always
    way over-priced if you bought it in the USA.

    not, so they're of no use to many people here.

    All mine are v1.3s not 2.0. Although the Zero W was never given a

    The word has a long history. There is a nuance. 'Vaproware' is a product
    that is announced but doesn't exist. The prime example is when Osborne announced the successor to the Osborne 1, killing the sales of the
    existing product without having the replacement in hand. Intel's 432 and Microsoft's Xenix may fall into that category.

    'Unobtanium' is a device that exists but you can't buy at the present
    time. The Zero is a current example. In the early '80s vendors were
    quoting similar lead times of over a year on commodity chips. That, in
    part, impacted IBM's PC design.

    Perhaps the Dutch are more ethical. Obama's election triggered panic
    buying of ammunition that resulted in bare shelves. Many vendors
    maintained the current price but quickly exhausted their stock. One
    vendors which had been known as a cheap source had stock but raised prices almost hourly. When the market normalized many remembered the vendor who
    used the 'whatever the market will bear' philosophy.

    The extremely overpriced vendors on Amazon have an advantage. Next year
    they can return with a brand new name. I did note a new Amazon feature, a 'high price alert' that suggested you might search a little further. The 'price history' graph is also useful.

    The tax man must have missed your collection. I returned from a Canadian
    site where I'd been setting up a system and had my toolbox, including a
    few octal relays in case I had to replace any. The relays were Japanese
    and I did not have proof that they had been purchased in the US so they charged me the import duty.

    The customs officers were being pricks. US and Canadian relations have
    been mixed far before Trump. When the countries are in a pissing contest citizens crossing the borer bear the brunt. I was next to a guy clearing
    the Canadian side. He was a shoe salesman with his sample case. They
    nailed him for the duty even though he pointed out they were all left foot shoes.

    As I mentioned in a previous post US and Canadian customs can be unpredictable. 1000 Zeroes probably would get you special processing.
    Bringing in Chinese tech might get you very special processing.

    That episode would have been around 1972. They also checked to make sure I wasn't a draft dodger sneaking home. The relationshi

    The funniest adventure was when a friend and sailed a International 500
    yawl from Kittery ME up the coast to St. John NB. We'd been to Grand Manan which is also NB but doesn't have a customs office so we cleared at the
    St. John harbor. We were low on vital supplies so we asked the nice
    customs lady where the nearest liquor store was. "You guys just came from
    the States? You're supposed to smuggle booze into Canada, not buy it
    here!"

    I will admit to some smuggling. When setting up a system in Trois Rivieres they'd assigned me a minder since most of the people couldn't speak
    English and I have no French. He went above and beyond, taking me around
    town after work so I asked if there was any way I could return the favor.
    He was fond of Prince Albert which is a US brand despite the name and not available or expensive in Canada. He got his Prince Albert in a can to
    echo the popular prank call.

    Canada was always bitchy about tobacco. They confiscated my father's Lucky Strikes on one trip. I didn't smoke until I was in my 20s and strange
    enough started with Exports in Ontario but in the US reverted to Luckies.

    Note PI4 kits ... which in some respects I like
    better (max speed and gizmos ain't everything) ...
    are about $100 less. So, if you want PI, consider
    the 4s right now. They're good enough to stream
    2k, sometimes 4k, video.

    "Bare" - Amazon has a an 2gb Pi4 for $86. Alas
    the 4gb are hardly seen and 8gb ones not at all.

    In USA, the term "pot metal" has been around for
    a very long time. Mostly zinc but with who-knows-
    what also mixed in there. It's not a consistent
    recipe.

    IS good enough for low-stress housings and such
    however and easy to cast/machine. Better than
    plastic but not as good as decent aluminum or
    steel alloy. HAS it's place IMHO.

    thermostat housings

    New Element Discovered at NRC Research Centre

    The heaviest element know to science was recently discovered by
    Physicists at the NRC Research Center. The element, tentatively
    named Administratium, has no protons or electrons and thus has
    an atomic number of 0. However, it does have 1 neutron, 125
    assistant neutrons, 75 vice neutrons and 111 assistant vice neutrons.
    This gives it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held
    together in a nucleus by a force that involves the continuous exchange
    of meson-like particles called morons.

    Since it has no electrons, Administratium is inert. However, it can
    be detected chemically as it impedes every reaction with which it
    comes in contact. According to the discoverers, a minute amount of Administratium caused one reaction to take over 4 days to complete,
    when normally it would occur in less than 1 second.

    Adminstratium has a normal half life of approximately 3 years, at
    which time it does not actually decay, but instead, undergoes a
    reorganization in which assistant neutrons, vice neutrons and assistant
    vice neutrons exchange places. Some studies have shown that the atomic
    weight actually increases after each reorganization.

    Research at other laboratories indicates that Administratium occurs
    naturally in the atmosphere. It tends to concentrate at certain points
    such as Government agencies, large corporations, universities and NRC. Administratium can be found in the newest, best maintained buildings.

    Scientists point out that Administratuim is known to be toxic at any
    level of concentration and can easily destroy any productive reactions
    where it is allowed to accumulate. Attempts are being made to determine
    how Administratium can be controlled to prevent irreversible damage, but results to date are not promising.

    It's soft enough you'd THINK it would be, but its not.

    Most aluminum alloys and 300 series stainless are
    not super-good with vibrations either - though
    better than 'pot metal'. I've seen 'magnesium' tire
    rims crack too.

    Only steel - esp nearly pure iron - seems to stand
    up to vibration, but it's HEAVY. Some cast iron,
    like that previously used for engine blocks, can
    be pretty good but will fracture on a sharp impact.
    I've seen old cracked engine blocks too.

    Plastics - they start 'crystalizing'/decomposing
    the instant they're made.

    So, alas, nothing 'perfect'. Not sure about titanium
    alloys but they're way too expensive and hard to work
    for most applications. Hey, pure gold doesn't stress
    harden/fracture ! :-)

    Thermosets are cross-linked and more stable than thermoplastics.

    The systems I worked with used thermosetting compounds, typically
    phenolic, expoxy, melamine, or furan. The last was a stopgap measure. The
    oil embargo had a great impact on the petrochemical industry and material
    was difficult to source. Furan is based on furfural, typically produced
    from corncobs. Like most stopgaps it didn't have the strength of phenols
    or epoxies, The flow characteristics were different and moldmakers had to adapt.

    Thermoplastics are a different animal. I worked briefly for a company that made polystyrene foam disposable dinnerware. One advantage of
    thermoplastics is you can regrind your mistakes. The blowing agent was Freon-12 and the company bought it by the railway tank car. That's another 'was' company on my resume, to say nothing of the CFC process.

    depending on the exact formula. UV-blocking additives
    help but they're not "forever".

    Bakelite ... holds up for quite awhile, esp indoors,
    but still does become more brittle. If you come across
    old Bakelite table radios from the 30s and 40s it's
    very common to see cracks and chips missing.

    Polycarbonate dies under UV exposure. Clear becomes
    cloudy and then brittleness sets in. On the plus it's
    fairly cheap.

    Many of the plastics we now use were invented way
    back in the 50s - which means both that 'exposure'
    has been VERY long and the performance is well known.

    One of my big concerns is how 'construction' plastics
    like epoxy resins are used. Remember the big tunnel
    in Boston where they hung a ridiculously heavy concrete
    panel roof from epoxy-mounted bolts ?

    (what mob-connected bunch specced a 4-inch concrete
    ceiling for a tunnel already made of concrete ?)

    UPVC is *Unplasticized* PVC. It is specifically NOT treated with those additives that make other PVC materials flexible.

    UPVC does contain fillers, especially Titanium Dioxide, which are added
    during manufacture for various reasons, one of which is to reduce UV
    damage to the PVC itself (but also to increase rigidity and reduce cost).

    number than Oganesson (which Wikipedia tells me is the highest that has
    been discovered, and more relevantly named, so far) it would not be
    jokey to name that element Corium. Giving an element-sounding name to an ad-hoc mixture is a joke.

    Unobtanium follows the same rules, and the joke is that the first
    part means it doesn't exist or cant be sourced.

    that got stronger and more heat-resistant the more
    heat and pressure you applied up to 12,000 degrees
    or more.
