I have been reflecting recently on how Apple devices have been working
for us since I bought my iPad 7 back in 2020, 6 years ago. It was
purchased to take advantage of a free ForeFlight subscription. I was
using Garmin Pilot, costing about $150 a year, and reasoned that the
iPad cost would be paid back in a few years.
We still have an iPad 7, running iOS 18, and it is working fine. As of
today we also have:
iPhone 14
iPhone 14 Pro
iPad 7 (cellular)
iPad 9 (cellular)
MacBook Air M4
Apple Watch SE2
Apple Watch 6
4x Air Tags
and
HP Envy (circa 2017)
HP Pavilion (circa 2017)
Both running current Windows 11 via Flyby11 (now FlyOOBE)
We resisted moving from Windows/Android for more than a decade. The
transition was not without some pain. But now it's amazing how the Apple devices all connect and work together to make life easier. Neither
Windows or Linux can come anywhere close to this overall experience.
Last week for example. I helped move 3 Cessna aircraft from their home
bases to Columbus IN for a USAF flight program. The Mac was used to
create and close out the flight management system sorties. The iPad and
iPhone were backup to aircraft navigation and airport status information systems. The iPhone and iPad were used for messaging ground staff on
flight takeoff and landing times. Tomorrow I will fly to Tennessee to
pick up another aircraft and take it to Columbus. iPad and iPhone are
part of that process.
The Mac was used to update an aircraft navigation database.
CarPlay was used to play music, navigate and check traffic every day.
Numerous in-app 2FA logons were made via the very clever iOS and MacOS
message and email authentication process that automatically deletes the originating message and email once completed.
We attended 2 concerts, tickets were in my iPhone Wallet.
Numerous purchases were made via Apple Pay. (Google Pay hardly ever
worked for me.)
Several phone calls were conducted on my MacBook, iPad and Watch via the iPhone connected to all three.
Misplaced car keys were located with FindMy.
Almost all day-to-day tech usage is on now Apple products. We do use
Roku for TV and Google Home, but Windows computers are hardly used at
all now. No way we are going back to where we were in 2020.
Looking ahead my Watch v.6 is going to need replacing soon. Probably
with an Apple Watch SE. The battery is starting to show signs of age and
it is no longer supported. We have no plans to replace the iPads. Our
iPhones are good for 3-4 more years. The M4 Mac is good for 5-7 more
years. All the non-Apple peripherals (monitors, keyboard, mouse,
printers, Thunderbolt hub, charging stations) are working great too.
It's a very happy place to be.
