    You have no idea what "truth" is. And since Dilbert WAS fiction, what exactly was your point? Assuming you had one.

    BTW, are you still denying that Apple everything runs on UNIX?

    That truth is stranger than fiction. In this context, it means that an
    idea that originated as parody, in a story about a chronically
    dysfunctional company, has been taken up by an actual real-life
    company, which really isnrCOt dysfunctional at all and not resembling

    But iOS is a fork of MacOS. iPadOS is a fork of iOS.

    But they are not rCLUNIXrCY.

    Neither is Linux. So what?

    It is the Apple fans making a big deal out of the fact that Apple gets
    to call itself rCLUNIXrCY. And under quite dubious pretences, as I have pointed out elsewhere.

    You, and only you, are the one making a big deal out of it. But you also say the term now has no real meaning to you. In short: you have no actual point.

    I happen to like that Apple moved to have something that gave me what I
    wanted:

    -----
    if DOS were a combo of UNIX and Mac it would be cool. I
    just wish we had something that combined the two. In theory
    that is the way both UNIX and Mac are growing
    -----

    <http://goo.gl/EDip> Jul 19 1995 <3ujt0s$535@news.nevada.edu>
    -----
    But UNIX does have some advantages over the Mac... a CLI
    would be a great addition to the Mac. I would say that
    between Mac and UNIX you have the best operating systems
    around.
    -----

    <http://goo.gl/vrLf> Aug 10 1995 <40d96e$7ke@news.nevada.edu>
    -----
    The Mac is not the end all in computer technology. Where it
    fails, UNIX excels. Between the two, there is almost no task
    that computers would be used for that can not be done. And
    one or the other will beat the competition in almost every
    area.
    -----

    In that last one I spoke of piping commands in a GUI. With Automator / Shortcuts, Apple does now have this to SOME extent. Would like to see that grow. They also have some of that with "Shortcuts" on iOS.

    Anyway, I wanted this LONG before macOS came along... and am happy Apple moved there. I am also happy to see UNIX/Linux move toward better GUIs. Both are
    good in my view. I still prefer the macOS GUI for most things, and am fine
    with Linux tending to come with more CLI tools and even having a speed advantage there. No ego-hit for me. Unlike you my self worth is not tied to
    any system, so again unlike you, I do not feel the insecurities you share. It is interesting how macOS clearly makes you feel deeply uncomfortable with yourself.

    They are all running the same OS. Just with different UIs. You
    know, modular. Do you still claim that ApplerCOs Unix is NOT
    modular?

    No, not modular. You canrCOt take the UI from one and put it on
    another, because the UI is an inextricable part of the OS kernel.
    Not like rCLUNIXrCY.

    What makes you think the UI is tied that way to the kernel?

    Because of the fact that you cannot separate it out.

    So just based on your own ignorance and not any actual evidence. Thanks.

    I will note you have repeatedly snipped my questions about Linux. How can I
    get these features on Linux?

    * Proxy icons
    * A Media Browser
    * Full screen programs integrating with virtual desktops
    * PDF Services
    * A system wide color selector which allows for add-ons
    * A system wide font manager where you can define sets and more
    * Application services
    * Renaming, moving, and duplicating from within programs
    * QuickLook (and its integration with so many programs)
    * Saved status indicators
    * A visual versioning system (allowing easy copy/paste from earlier versions)
    * Consistent print dialogs
    * Consistent save and open dialogs
    * Consistent common dialog names, placements, and hot keys
    * Path popup from title bar
    * Recent items list that works with moved / renamed files
    * Integrated dictation services
    * Integrated text-to-voice services
    * Core Image / graphics filters
    * System wide auto-save
    * Data Detectors
    * Continuity / Camera integration
    * System-level biometrics / keychain integration
    * System wide grammar and spelling
    * Universal Clipboard & Cross-Device Handoff
    * Universal Control (Single mouse on multiple Macs / iPads)
    * Live Text & Visual Look Up
    * Native Menu Bar Search
    * AppleScript / OSA (Open Scripting Architecture)

    My guess: your insecurities will push you to not even think about it... you might find where macOS does things better and that makes you feel bad about
    not just the OSs but yourself. You will snip and run instead of thinking about tech.

    Agreed... but you expressed a desire to gatekeep, or at least frustration with people not staying in these arbitrary walls you create and then frustrate yourself with. It shows you do not really understand what open source is

    The fact that it shows Apple has run out of ideas, and now has to copy wholesale from the open-source world.

    How do you figure that? I do not see it at all.

    To anybody who cares enough to respond. Those who donrCOt care, donrCOt

    Who do you think Apple is losing its shine to -- other than you? And if you really think there is some issue with what Apple is doing why not focus on

    You go on and on and on and never really get to a point... other than you have a deeply irrational hatred of all things Apple tied to your own challenges and insecurities about tying yourself to an OS and getting you value from it.

    I am making an observation. That's it. Free of emotion. It is simply a fact
    you demonstrate deep insecurities with your bizarre and often contradictory attacks against macOS where you never really make a point.

    There are plenty of places to look at the pros and cons of the different systems. That could be interesting. Especially if the more user-focused parts of the systems I would love to see it. But you... you have been crying for a long time about how Apple uses open source, as if that is bad. It is not. You have no real point... other than maybe you like that Linux has native containers and you find it curious that Linux is also used in containers for macOS. OK. And? You never get to the and part. You jump to emotion-filled conclusions and put down other systems... making meaningless attacks. As you note, that shows you have run out of rational arguments.

    As far as me, I offer rational arguments. You snip and run. I like Linux for being free (as in no cost) and open. A clear benefit. Love it. And it is efficient in terms of running commands, especially in the CLI.

    I like macOS for its ease of use and added choices for task completion. Some
    of the tools / features I admire:

    * Proxy icons
    * A Media Browser
    * Full screen programs integrating with virtual desktops
    * PDF Services
    * A system wide color selector which allows for add-ons
    * A system wide font manager where you can define sets and more
    * Application services
    * Renaming, moving, and duplicating from within programs
    * QuickLook (and its integration with so many programs)
    * Saved status indicators
    * A visual versioning system (allowing easy copy/paste from earlier versions)
    * Consistent print dialogs
    * Consistent save and open dialogs
    * Consistent common dialog names, placements, and hot keys
    * Path popup from title bar
    * Recent items list that works with moved / renamed files
    * Integrated dictation services
    * Integrated text-to-voice services
    * Core Image / graphics filters
    * System wide auto-save
    * Data Detectors
    * Continuity / Camera integration
    * System-level biometrics / keychain integration
    * System wide grammar and spelling
    * Universal Clipboard & Cross-Device Handoff
    * Universal Control (Single mouse on multiple Macs / iPads)
    * Live Text & Visual Look Up
    * Native Menu Bar Search
    * AppleScript / OSA (Open Scripting Architecture)

    Some of these might exist (or equivalents) on Linux. Most do not (and some are not fully realized on macOS). But overall these add up to a fairly good advantage on macOS. One I enjoy and benefit from.

    Does not mean Linux (or Windows) is bad. Does not mean I will attack or mock them. I just happen to appreciate those features for the benefits to productivity, efficiency, and error-reduction that they offer.

    I bet you respond with an emotional snip and run. You tie your self worth to Linux. Speaking of where other systems have benefits, even in CSMA, is somehow outside your comfort zone.

    Honestly:

    Who the hell cares?

    My MacBook Air is NEVER off.

    Same. I hate having to put the password to boot, and I can just use the reliable fingerprint sensor instead by letting it sleep. Unlike PC
    laptops, I notice that the machine doesn't drain _at all_ if it sleeps.
    The stupidity of Modern Standby is foreign to Apple, so their hardware
    does exactly what you expect it to do when you close the lid: sleep.

    It goes to sleep when I'm not using it, and so when I want to use it,
    it's instantly available.

    A Mac Mini draws something on the order of 4-6 watts when asleep.

    So if left asleep for an entire year, the machine will use about 52.5
    kW-hr of electricity.

    In the most expensive jurisdiction that will cost you about 7.5-o per day.

    Why would you ever actually turn it off?

    Honestly, the Mac is pretty much the only piece of hardware I've ever
