Wow, what an adventure. Immediately after installing Tahoe 26.6 my HD
free space dropped by almost 100 GB. Something named ~"other users and
shared data" was the culprit. After consulting with Apple support I did
a Time Machine restore from the prior day. That fixed it.

I'm wondering if this is a common issue and also had I just waited would
    it have fixed itself.

It's a real case and it was about "Managing Device Storage" on the day

    How do you fabricate that?

I can forward the email from Apple Support. Give me an address. Of

Tahoe 26.6 update and excessive other users and shared data fix

    and the AI Overview states:

    <begin paste>

To fix bloated "Other Users & Shared" storage after the macOS Tahoe 26.6 update, clear out the hidden /Users/Shared directory or delete unused
user accounts through Apple Support settings. Re-index Spotlight if
    storage calculations appear stuck.

    Clean Up Shared Folder

Open Finder and select Go > Go to Folder.
    Type /Users/Shared and press Return.
Inspect files left behind by old apps or users, then drag unneeded items
    to the Trash.
Empty the Trash to reclaim space.

    Remove Unused Accounts

Open System Settings and go to Users & Groups.
Delete any old or test user accounts you no longer need.
Choose to delete the home folder when prompted to free up the allocated storage.
Recheck storage under General > Storage

    <end paste>

Anyway, the whole purpose of the post was how useful Time Machine was in resolving the issue. The tech on the chat and I tried some of those
items and it freed up some space but far from all. After making a backup
I used Time machine to restore user file and app state before the
update, but did not do an OS restore. That fixed it.

So not a common issue. Still wondering if it was something that corrects over time.

An issue NOT REPORTED AT ALL.

More generally there do seem to be issues with System Data blowing up
over time. Tons of references to issues and proposed fixes via Google.
Not that Windows does have similar bloat problems.

About a year ago my iPhone System Data went from almost nothing to about
50 gb almost overnight. I went to the Apple Store and and we tried a few things with no results and finally did a complete wipe and restore.
Fixed it and has not come back. Just Google "iOS system data". Similar
to this recent event, but did a partial restore.

    Sure it did.

Anyway, the whole purpose of the post was how useful Time Machine
was in resolving the issue. The tech on the chat and I tried some of
those items and it freed up some space but far from all. After
making a backup I used Time machine to restore user file and app
state before the update, but did not do an OS restore. That fixed it.

You get that AI is easily wrong...right?

Look beneath what AI generically said, and to the actual search results. >>>
NONE for this problem occurring with 26.6, Liarboy.

So not a common issue. Still wondering if it was something that
    corrects over time.

An issue NOT REPORTED AT ALL.

Not reported is not the same as that it never happens.

More generally there do seem to be issues with System Data blowing up
over time. Tons of references to issues and proposed fixes via Google.
Not that Windows does have similar bloat problems.

About a year ago my iPhone System Data went from almost nothing to
about 50 gb almost overnight. I went to the Apple Store and and we
tried a few things with no results and finally did a complete wipe and
restore. Fixed it and has not come back. Just Google "iOS system
data". Similar to this recent event, but did a partial restore.

    Sure it did.

Yes it did. Prove it did not. Onus is on you.

Google "iphone system data taking up too much space"

Lots of returns for that one. It happens.

I'm wondering if this is a common issue and also had I just
waited would it have fixed itself.

    Look at that!

On the entire internet, not ONE other person has written about

'Tahoe 26.6 "other users and shared data"'

    https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Tahoe+26.6+
    %22other+users+and+shared+data%22&t=osx&ia=web

    Zero results.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=Tahoe+26.6+
    %22other+users+and+shared+data%22&client=safari&hs=yb2&sca_esv=aa935214e3a0e545&sxsrf=APpeQntjG0Vqy3cuPlT_lAb8_6LHdEgNTA%3A1785717462644&source=hp&ei=1uJvatDRJPq70PEP--fJmQ8&iflsig=ABILxe8AAAAAam_w5g_fdsQKa4kOO80ZTMxTx3iw8Qb6&ved=0ahUKEwjQlJz4m4OWAxX6HTQIHftzMvMQ4dUDCC4&uact=5&oq=Tahoe+26.6+%22other+users+and+shared+data%22&gs_lp=Egdnd3Mtd2l6IihUYWhvZSAyNi42ICJvdGhlciB1c2VycyBhbmQgc2hhcmVkIGRhdGEiMgUQABjvBTIFEAAY7wUyBRAAGO8FMgUQABjvBUiJC1AAWABwAHgAkAEAmAG7AaABuwGqAQMwLjG4AQPIAQD4AQL4AQGYAgGgAr8BmAMAkgcDMC4xoAezArIHAzAuMbgHvwHCBwMyLTHIBwOACAE&sclient=gws-wiz

Google has results about "other users and shared data" and Tahoe... >>>>>>
...but not if you include "26.6".

    Hmmm, I Google

Tahoe 26.6 update and excessive other users and shared data fix

    and the AI Overview states:

    <begin paste>

To fix bloated "Other Users & Shared" storage after the macOS Tahoe >>>>> 26.6 update, clear out the hidden /Users/Shared directory or delete >>>>> unused user accounts through Apple Support settings. Re-index
Spotlight if storage calculations appear stuck.

    Clean Up Shared Folder

Open Finder and select Go > Go to Folder.
    Type /Users/Shared and press Return.
Inspect files left behind by old apps or users, then drag unneeded
    items to the Trash.
Empty the Trash to reclaim space.

    Remove Unused Accounts

Open System Settings and go to Users & Groups.
Delete any old or test user accounts you no longer need.
Choose to delete the home folder when prompted to free up the
    allocated storage.
Recheck storage under General > Storage

    <end paste>

And of course, because you say the "problem" is "fixed" now...
