• Favorite text adventure?

What was your favorite text adventure or graphics/text adventure for the Commodore 8-bit line? Mine was Trasure Island by Windham Classics. It has
the dubious honor of being one of the only adventure game that I ever solved (and it took me MONTHS!), it also got me to read the actual book by Rober
    Louis Stevenson.

I liked the game engine, and the graphics and music also added to the
    overall experience.

I always avoided the text adventures because of their limited
"understanding" of what you could do. I did try Hulk, or was
    it Incredible Hulk.

In the beginning you were tied up and I guess you had to do
"bite lip" to get free. If you did not do so, you would be
forever stuck in the beginning. I never got anything done
    and gave up.

LOL, don't feel bad! That is how most of my experience with these adventure or puzzle games went.

I think out of all the ones I tried.

    * Scott Adams series
    Adventureland
    Pirates Adventure

    * Windham Classic's
    Treasure Island
    Swiss Family Robinson

    *Tellarium
    Rendevouz With Rama

    *Sierra Online
    Leisure Suit Larry
    Police Quest 3
    Police Quest

    *Unknown publisher
    Masqurade

I was only ever able to complete
Treaure Island and Police Quest 3....

    So there ya go! :)

The Hobbit. Simply, because I was not into graphic adventures, but a
friend used to play it. So it's the only one I know.

Strange.. No, that is coming from My BBS. Though it is not supposed to be a header, but appended to the very of the message, as an Origin tag.

Someone is making a Scummvm engine for Synchronet.. We'll be able to
play Monkey Island and such games on BBSes soon.
With a fancy terminal, that is.

You can already play Gameboy games.

That someone is me. :-) It's called SyncScumm and (along with SyncDOOM, SyncDuke, SyncRetro, SyncConquer, SyncMoo1, and SyncRPG) can be run on any DOOR32.SYS compatible BBS (not just Synchronet). I play to make an intro/demo YT video soon. I think it'll blow some minds.

With a fancy terminal, that is.

Works best with SyncTERM v1.10+ (the only option if you want audio), but many other terminals support Sixel (graphics), mouse input, and "Kitty keys" already (even Windows Terminal!), so it's pretty common feature set nowadays.

You can already play Gameboy games.

I know HM Derdoc did a Gameboy emulation door - I have not (yet, at least). SyncRetro already supports Intellivison, NES, and classic Arcade games (ROMs), but not Gameboy or other handhelds.

Do these Sync* environments require that the sysop own the games, or do the games/some games come with packages like the Scummvm engine?

Some great SCUMM games are completely free and Synchronet (in gitlab now and included in next release) includes small installation packages for:

    Space Quest 0: Replicated
    Cascade Quest
    Betrayed Alliance Book 1
    Drascula: The Vampire Strikes Back
    Lure of the Temptress
    Flight of the Amazon Queen
    Beneath a Steel Sky

which downloads the game assets and installs/configures the door into Synchronet's config files for the sysop.

For commercial games (e.g. Maniac Mansion), the sysop needs to provide the (assumed purchased/owned) game assets. Instructions that use Maniac Mansion as the example included in https://gitlab.synchro.net/main/sbbs/-/blob/master/src/doors/syncscumm/README.md

Yes! Tons of terminals will have support for sure. Except ones like this

For me it has to be The Tracer Sanction. I clearly remember being
just blown away by the animated clock in the Jeweler's Store.
I still play it sometimes. I've even thought about maybe trying
    to do speed-runs of it.

Mindshadow was the companion game to The Tracer Sanction and
seems like it uses the same engine. Also excellent. Both games
have this peculiar drawing style where everything is refined
and perfect but then there will be a face just scribbled
    in. Great stuff.
