I've just had to rebuild my Linux box. Tedious but
straightforward. Then came setting up newsgroups in
    Thunderbird.

I came across the same problem which I'd met before - being
unable to see the groups I wanted to subscribe to. I
suffered the same frustration which I'd had before, at
least twice. Many years ago I found a way but couldn't
remember what it was. The next time, I exported the profile
from a working machine and avoided the problem altogether.

The solution was simple but it took some finding on the
internet. After setting up the account but before trying to
subscribe, close Thunderbird and re-open it. That's all it
    takes.

No doubt those of you using Thunderbird will have had no
problem but come the day when you've forgotten how, just
    remember. Close, then open.

Thank you. That's good to know. I have over the years come
across a lot more problems with Thunderbird, and cannot in
all honesty recommend it as a /good software/. That said, I
was unable to find anything remotely usable to post on Usenet
that works on the operating systems I like to use in my every
    day activity these days.

One problem I ran into, and probably still have, is that it's
impossible to add more accounts without removing the profile
and start all over again. That probably means I'll have to
subscribe to all the newsgroups all over again. So I recommend
people worried about this, take an extra care to have a list
of the newsgroups in a text file, blog, or a word processor of
choice, handy so at least it will be possible to re-subscribe
if the Thunderbird profile turns out to be useless.

That said, I don't do this yet, but I believe I might do just
    that in the near future.

Not sure it's much use to Acorn users, but I use claws-mail on my PC
and it also works on Linux as both a mail and usenet client, and it
works quite well. It can be as quite simple or complicated as you like
with various plugins. I just use it for usenet for imap testing for my
    BBS from time to time.
