My desktop has been completely changed, including a WiFi icon for the WiFi
that I presumably don't have the hardware to acess, but the displayed
version of RISC OS still reads 5.29, presumably as a result of the error
about something or other 4te not being found.

The only files from !Boot that got saved in "Direct Backups" are
MimeMap, PreDesktop and an Internet directory, so all my Look at/Run
list got wiped somehow. Fortunately I have a manual backup of
Boot:Choices from which to try to reconstruct it.

To not have the WIFI icon you must use !Configure/!NetWorks: Legacy option
The ARMX6 has the hardware to connect via WIFI, it just needs an antenna,
I tried it and it works.

In the upgrade zip folder (provided by Rcomp) there is a !System folder
that you should not forget to install.

I wouldn't bother too much about not having WiFi. Although it may be a
great achievement that WiFi is now working with RISC OS, I nevertheless
never use it, because of the huge difference in speed compared to ethernet.

Actually, I was hoping for a new version of Iris in this distribution, now
that it seems to be generally released. Unfortunately, it's still the same version that I use since nearly a year - so we still can't copy and paste
text within it.

It looks as if the ARMX6 actually does include WiFi hardware on the

On a machine that is already attached to an Ethernet cable it isn't of
any practical use, of course. And as Jean-Michel says, you presumably
need some kind of receiving aerial.

Not in this case, because I got the Raspberry Pi version by mistake....

Although the archive does contain an upgrade !Boot that seems to have a
new !System inside it - I think the installer was simply looking for OS
files that don't exist on the !Boot structure supplied with this
hardware.

I have now applied what I think is the correct upgrade for the ARMX6,
which is reporting itself as having RISC OS 5.31 of 21 July 2024, and
the new NetworkManager. However, one very noticeable change is that it
takes 30 seconds to negotiate DHCP in the pre-desktop sequence and then
spends another 15 seconds or so displaying the new banner before the
desktop is usable, which is definitely much longer than before; the
original introduction of DHCP slowed things down a good deal, but not to anything like this extent. Is this normal, or is it an indication that
it is looking for files it can't find and then eventually timing-out?
