• Help with PDF file viewer

    From Dave@dave@triffid.co.uk to comp.sys.acorn.apps on Sat Dec 13 09:09:12 2025
    From Newsgroup: comp.sys.acorn.apps

    Sigh!

Viewing some PDF files on RISC OS recently I discovered I have two PDF
    file viewers installed.

"About this program" shows Identical Authors.

But the version numbers are very confusing, so I'm wonder if anyone can
    assuage my confused state?

    Version: 3.02.1.24.1 (6 Mar 2017)

    The other...

    Version: 3.00.1.19a 32bit (15 April 2025)

So how could 3.00.1.19a 32bit (15 April 2025) be a newer version than...

    3.02.1.24.1 (6 Mar 2017) version?

    ?

    Thanks
    Dave

Possibly because that's what happens to Open Source projects when
multiple people decide to build updates to the source code without communicating with those that went before them?

Maybe the versions forked at 3.00.1.19, or maybe the version numbering
through to 3.02.1.24 didn't get recorded as well as it might?

You would have to diff the sources for the two versions to work it out, I suspect.

and both versions will coexist side-by-side on the iconbar distinguished

It was on the above site but seems to have been removed. I think that
version had a SWP issue IIRC as I found it would not load on my CM4
computer, but patched it via the !PatchSWP program.

I now tend to ignore all the above and use the built in PDF reader in
!Iris as it is much better at rendering newer PDF's.

!MuView is the next best thing as an alternative.

It would be nice to have one version available and supported!

    Totally agree

use the sprite view and it will render most of the embedded fonts.

Or if you have a suitable machine the PDF viewer in Iris web browser is as good as MuView and maybe better.

Iris would be much more useful if it would export as Drawfile which PDF
can, but can't handle the embedded fonts which Iris can.

Drawfiles, like PDF files, are scaleable, unlike Sprites, Iris' chosen
    export format!

My main application is in music notation, but whilst Iris can display and support some processing with the site:

    ABC_Tools: https://www.michaeleskin.com/abctools/abctools.html

it falls over at the final but vital step of saving the PDF music score -
it just gets stuck and I don't know where, or to whom, to report that.

    Is there a bug tracker?

I don't think there's a user-facing bug tracker. The advice seems to be to email details to RISC OS Developments,
    i.e. to Andrew Rawnsley <andrew@riscosdev.com>
