    Hi folks,

Having got to the back pages of my shiny new copy of Archive, I found an article on the lesser spotted app AppsClock.

    http://www.ajb121.net/riscos/

    AppsClock 1.51

I duly downloaded the zip file. It wouldn't open with SparkFS. I also got
error messages about SparkFS memory being corrupted. I moved it to the
dark side and it opened there so I moved the contents back to RISC OS.

FAST Pi Compute Module 4 RISC OS 5.29

I tried to run AppsClock but it didn't load on the icon bar. It just
opened a second copy of StrongED showing the RunImage.

Today I downloaded a fresh copy and tried again on RISC OS. This time the
zip file open but when I dragged the app out of the zip I got.

    Error : &80000002
Message: Internal error: abort on data transfer at &2083C974
15:04:47.13 ** WimpError ** from Filer Action Window
    Error : &00000000
Message: Unrecoverable internal error (Internal error: abort on data
transfer at &2083C974), must exit immediately

    Curiouser and curiouser.

Can anyone confirm this or is it just me?

    You are not alone!

I downloaded a new copy, but it is in fact absolutely identical to a
    copy I downloaded in 2007!

SparkFS 1.57 (the latest, I tink) will open it here, but trying to run
from the zip results in Data Transfer Abort at &21312A5c, which is
+42C8 in the Zip module (which is v1.52).

I have also seen similar messages to you if I try to drag it out of
    the zip.

I have no proof that the zip used to open ok ... but I suspect one of
the many SparkFS changes since 2007 may have provoked this.

Yes it is. Running here now on 5.31 (14 Aug 2025)

It works just fine with SparkFS v1.46 (06 Jul 2020) read-only
But It fails with SparkFS v1.52 (08 Mar 2023)

So one of the SparkFS changes in that time broke it!

Have you checked the filetypes inside the application directory? It
sounds as if the Obey files (and possibly others) have not been
filetyped properly on extraction from the archive.

Trying ZipInfo with verbose output reveals a lot of reports of truncated blocks, although it can list the contents.

So a "marginal" Zip file and some regression in SparkFS? Perhaps report the problem to ROOL (in the forums, or as a bug)?

apsclk gets the same reaction when I try to unzip it on Ubuntu. I
    haven't bothered with the others.

We don't know what he zipped them with, but the results appear to be incompatible with any modern zip unpacker.

I'm not sure since the files date from 2001...
If you have applications from this site, it would be good to archive them.
I use !AppsClock and it works correctly on AMX6 and CM4.

I looked to see if it would be possible to revert to SparkFS 1.41 here,
but it would be too difficult. All the upgrades were via the Freshen
app, so you never got a complete new version except by upgrading from

So, since this was just a curiosity anyway, I'm not going to do any more.

My editions of SparkPlug, PackDir, ZipEE are not 32 bit compatible so couldn't try them.

    Is AppsClock 32 bit compatible?

I've got it working on Virtual Acorn Adjust 4.39 Windows 10 Acer netbook by opening it with ZipEE.

Works fine here on 32-bit 4.42 Downloaded from website and extracted using SparkFS v1.41

I looked to see if it would be possible to revert to SparkFS 1.41 here,
but it would be too difficult. All the upgrades were via the Freshen
app, so you never got a complete new version except by upgrading from an earlier one.

You can download an original copy of SparkFS 1.46 from David Pilling's old software section on his Wiki

    https://www.davidpilling.com/wiki/index.php/SparkFS

Near the bottom of the page.

    Any use?

Thanks, yes; lo and behold, it opens the archive just fine! The resulting
    app works.

So who knows what has happened to the file formats in the intervening
    years.

Anyway, same result: my curiosity is satisfied, I've finished now.
