• Meta data etc

    From Chris Newman@newslists@npost.uk to comp.sys.acorn.apps on Sun Sep 27 16:03:25 2026
    From Newsgroup: comp.sys.acorn.apps

    Hi folks,

Would someone kindly convince me I'm not imagining things.

I think there was an application to edit meta data in an image and one to change date stamps on files.

My brain has turned to mush. (Usual state).

With a few modifications it works on a cm4
    A) in Basic program:
    Edit !Runimage with with !Zap
Add near the beginning of the file!
    zA% = TRUE
    rC% = TRUE
    UA% =
These variables are missing in if conditions.

you need the last version , to remplace in .Bin https://homepages.plus.net/pittdj/rool25/exiftools.zip

To test while waiting for Fred to update.

Good question, I've had this problem before and the answer was:

    https://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/1/topics/6386?page=4

"StrongEd is not yet capable of editing BASIC programmes properly u it
throws away the line numbers and then makes up its own by renumbering as
    you save it. "

If you do the test with both editors, you will have the answer.
I had the same error as you and I thought about !Zap.

Hi, for Runimage file you need to edit it with !Zap....

As an old and long time Zap aficionado I never thought I'd ask this
question, however in recent times, I've moved over from Zap the
    StrongED...

So... Why does Zap need to be used?

    Why not use StrongED?

Because Zap edits BASIC files in their tokenised form, whilst StrongED detokenises them into text for editing and then retokenises them when you
    save.

That's not normally a problem, but if a program is aggressively crunched
then it's possible to get it into a form where it's unambiguous when
tokenised, but becomes impossible to retokenise from text without the
    tokeniser getting confused.

I can't remember the exact combinations, but think variables and keywords running into each other in ways that can't be disambiguated. Aside from anything else, the tokeniser is not a clever thing: it does some basic
pattern matching and makes a very limited attempt to understand what it's working on.

    Dave

I've had the Runimage open side by side in both !Zap and StrongED... I
    see no difference. :-/

    D.

Good question, I've had this problem before and the answer was:

    https://www.riscosopen.org/forum/forums/1/topics/6386?page=4

"StrongEd is not yet capable of editing BASIC programmes properly u it throws away the line numbers and then makes up its own by renumbering as
    you save it. "

If you do the test with both editors, you will have the answer.
I had the same error as you and I thought about !Zap.

    Aha! I see.

    Thanks
    Dave

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

    Hi folks,

Would someone kindly convince me I'm not imagining things.

I think there was an application to edit meta data in an image and one to change date stamps on files.

There's also ExIfInfo - can't edit the info but provides many ways of
    using it.
